Course Description

In this course you will acquire the skills and knowledge to review production processes used in garment production and contribute to identifying and implementing improvements.

1Identify key elements of production requirements

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Cutting table and seating are set up according to OHS practices and specifications for work.
1.2 Equipment is set up and checked.
1.3 Routine maintenance of cutting equipment is undertaken.
1.4 Cutting table is prepared to suit lay length.

2Review production processes

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Lay-up instructions are interpreted.
2.2 Fabric is collected and checked off according to OHS practices.
2.3 Fabric width and quality are checked against lay-up instructions.
2.4 Fabric is laid up, spread and fabric tension is adjusted to suit fabric performance.
2.5 Fabric is checked for faults and required action is taken.
2.6 Lay height and position of fabric are checked according to cutting equipment and work specifications.
2.7 Aids to assist lay-up are used according to job card and workplace practices.

3Identify improvement opportunities

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Fabric is cut to lay, using cutting equipment according to requirements for operation.
3.2 Cut work is inspected, any faults identified and appropriate action taken to ensure cut pieces meet required quality standards.
3.3 Preventative action to avoid any recurrence of defective pieces is taken and recorded.
3.4 Performance of cutting equipment is regularly checked for signs of faulty operation, including evidence from inspection of cut pieces and any required action is taken.
3.5 OHS practices are followed to eliminate risks to personal safety.

4Implement improvement

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Work is bundled according to job card.
4.2 Cut work is directed to next operation and work area is cleaned and prepared for next job.
4.3 Master copy of lay marker is stored in filing drawer or computer as
appropriate.

Details of Learning Activities

In general your training is contextualised according to the company’s production processes undertaken as a part of the trainees normal work duties.

Your tasks are selected for training and explanation of the task to be undertaken is given by the trainer and the correct procedure discussed. The task is demonstrated by the trainer and underpinning skills and knowledge are developed.

When the trainer is confident you are capable of undertaking the task safely you will then do the task. During this time your work would be monitored by the trainer and questioning and further instruction given.

You will also be given workplace based tasks and activities to complete and practice between visits. Any activities and work performed between visits are reviewed and further training is undertaken accordingly.

Teaching Schedule

In general you will taught by 5 means within a workplace raining context:

1 Introduction and overview of course. Basics of skills required and course content 2 hours
2 Use of learning resources and basic skills development 2 hours
3 Complete manuals 4 hours
4 Supervised skill development to competency 20 hours
5 Consolidation of skills and assessment 2 hours

You will practice skills and understanding as a part of your workplace duties between sessions. Activities and work performed between visits are reviewed in the following session and further training is undertaken accordingly.
