Course Description

In this course you will acquire the skills and knowledge required to load articles into water-based cleaning machines and process to specifications and quality requirements.

1 Operate finishing equipment

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Production schedule and work load priorities are correctly
1.2 Machine and equipment loads are accurately determined by weight or classification
1.3 Weighing machines are operated and size of load is determined by correctly reading indicator scales
1.4 Wet cleaning schedules are followed for a given process or article
1.5 Machine operator instructions are correctly followed
1.6 Records are completed
1.7 Workplace procedures and instruction are read and interpreted


2 Inspect articles

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Machine is loaded with correct weight for machine according
to product classification manufacturers’ specifications,
workplace procedures and OHS practices
2.2 Wet cleaning program is correctly determined for type of wash
2.3 Water levels and temperature are correctly selected for load type
2.4 Appropriate additives are correctly added to machine
2.5 Machine is operated in accordance with operating instructions
2.6 Additives and dosing system are prepared and monitored for correct operation and faults reported where appropriate
2.7 Articles are unloaded using correct manual handling techniques where required
2.8 Records are completed
2.9 Knowledge of operating processes are applied to perform required tasks

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course you will be able to prepare for wet cleaning, operate and monitor a wet cleaning machine plus sort and inspect articles.

Details of Learning Activities

In general your training is contextualised according to the company’s production processes undertaken as a part of the trainees normal work duties.

Your tasks are selected for training and explanation of the task to be undertaken is given by the trainer and the correct procedure discussed. The task is demonstrated by the trainer and underpinning skills and knowledge are developed.

When the trainer is confident you are capable of undertaking the task safely you will then do the task. During this time your work would be monitored by the trainer and questioning and further instruction given.

You will also be given workplace based tasks and activities to complete and practice between visits. Any activities and work performed between visits are reviewed and further training is undertaken accordingly.

Teaching Schedule

In general you will be taught by 6 means within a workplace training context as follows:

1. Introduction and overview of course. Basics of skills required and course content 2 hours
2. Use of learning resources and basic skills development 2 hours
3. Workshop 6 hours
4. Complete manuals 4 hours
5. Supervised skill development to competency 44 hours
6. Consolidation of skills and assessment 2 hours

You will practice skills and understanding as a part of your workplace duties between sessions. Activities and work performed between visits are reviewed in the following session and further training is undertaken accordingly.

Assessment will be in the form of observation and your ability to operate finishing equipment and Inspect articles and by questioning for underpinning knowledge.
