Course Description

In this course students learn the skills and knowledge to assist the television producer/director for a live to air, live to tape or pre-recorded television production.

Details of Learning Activities

Students will learn technical skills to set up and operate television studio equipment. Students will work in small groups to plan and produce multi camera television productions and participate in a range of roles as crew members. There will be sessions covering camera operation, vision mixing, audio mixing, lighting a set, directing, floor managing and opportunities for review of exercises and assessments.

Week 4 Camera skills, directing protocols, communications and talkback
Week 5 Studio microphones and audio mixer use. Production exercise
Week 6 Project 1 rehearsal, group production meetings
Week 7 Project 1 shoot
Week 8 Project 1 shoot
Week 9 Review of Project 1, studio program analysis, production meetings for project 2
Week 10 Studio lighting protocols and practice, switching for an interview program.
Week 11 Setting up and producing a live music performance, Project 2 preparations
Week 12 Review class exercises. Written test. Final submissions for Project 2

Overview of Assessment

Students will complete two short multi-camera tv productions as well as analytical exercises.


Assessment Tasks

Project 1 – Still Picture Multicam Production

A production group of 4 students to produce a 3-5 minute ’live’ program.
The production group will consist of a director, vision mixer, audio panel operator, and video tape recorder/graphics. Group members are to rotate through the four production roles.
Assessment is based on the quality of the final production and group performance in each production role.

20% of total mark (Group mark)

Project 2 – Magazine Program Production

The production group to produce an eight minute (min) “magazine” style program, live in the studio. Examples of magazine style productions include: Interview show, variety show, game show, demonstration or cooking segments etc.
The production group must submit a portfolio that includes: a production brief; a shooting script; camera cards; set and lighting plans.
Each student also must submit an individual production journal and critique of the finished program.

40% of the total marks. (Group mark)

Individual journal and critique analysis for project 2  
20% of total marks. (Individual)

Written Test
A short answer /multiple choice test will be undertaken before the production of project two.
