This course covers the skills and knowledge required to identify industry laws and regulations and apply them to workplace activities.

Details of Learning Activities

This competency is taught alongside two other competencies:

  • Develop and apply industry knowledge EMPL 5229C
  • Maintain workplace safety OHTH 5090C
Weekly lectures are held in the auditorium, where you will have the opportunity to listen to guest speakers speaking about their particular area of expertise within the writing and publishing industry.
You will also have the opportunity to ask questions and join the discussion around topics raised during the session. 


Teaching Schedule

This course, together with 2 other competencies, is taught in the semester-long Industry Overview class. Weekly lectures are timetabled on Wednesday evenings at 5 pm during Semester 1.  In second semester there will be an online component to the course.
This teaching schedule is subject to change according to availability of speakers. Students will be notified in advance of any change.

The following three assignments address the three Industry Overview course competencies :

  • Maintain workplace safety OHTH 5090C
Assignment 1

•    MAINTAIN WORKPLACE SAFETY BSBCMN311A
The lecture concerning this competency will be held on the 27th May 2009.
Attendance is important as information regarding this assessment will be given here.
Assessment involves creating a health and safety plan for someone working in the writing and publishing industry.
A short written plan is to be submitted

This assignment is due by the end of semester 1  

Assignment 2

•    IDENTIFY INDUSTRY LAWS AND REGULATIONS AND APPLY TO WORKPLACE ACTIVITIES CUFGEN02A
Select an area within the publishing or writing industry.
Research any industry laws and regulations that might impact on people working in this area. Produce a short report discussing your findings.  ie ‘Copyright laws’.
500 words.

This assignment is due by the end of semester 1 

Assignment 3

•    DEVELOP AND APPLY INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE CUFGEN01A
One of the most interesting aspects of industry knowledge is the sharing of professional experience and expertise.
Research an area that you found interesting from the 2009 Industry Overview guest speakers, or any other industry area of personal interest to you.
Write a report of 1000 words. This report to be posted on Blackboard  during semester 2 as a shared resource for the Professional Writing and Editing  students. If you wish to present your information in another format, eg. an interview or a blog you are welcome to do  this, but you must discuss your idea with the teacher first.

This assignment is due by the end of semester 2
