Course Description

The competency Maintain workplace safety is taught within the course Industry Overview. In this course you look at issues of health and safety that may affect you as a writer or editor. You also increase your knowledge of the writing and publishing industry through contact with a broad range of people who are currently working in different areas of the industry and explore the laws and regulations governing the industry.

1. Assist incorporation of Occupational Health and Safety policy and procedures into the workplace. 

Performance Criteria:

1.1Understanding of basic requirements of Occupational Health and Safety legislation in area of responsibility appropriate for health and safety needs of a small work team are demonstrated
1.2Information on the organisation’s Occupational Health and Safety policies, procedures and programs is provided in a readily accessible manner and clearly explained to the work group
1.3Information about identifying hazards and the outcomes of risk assessment and control is regularly provided and clearly explained to the work group

4.3Inadequacies in existing risk control measures are identified and reported in accordance with the hierarchy of controls
4.4Occupational Health and Safety records of incidents in the work area are accurately completed and maintained in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety legal requirements

Assessment Tasks

To demonstrate competency in this course, you will need to complete the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard.

Assessment 1: Create a health and safety plan for yourself taking into account your individual needs and the advice provided at the lecture. *This is the assessment related to this competency OHTH5090C. (Due August 21)


Assessment 2: Select an area within the publishing or writing industry and research any industry laws and regulations that might impact on writers and/or editors. Produce a short report of 500 words discussing your findings. (If your area of interest is copyright, you may submit the work completed in the Copyright area of the Editing 1 course.) Due October 16


Assessment 3: Focus on industry event
You will work collaboratively in a team to organise an industry event about some aspect of the publishing industry. You will coordinate with your teacher to research a topic, set a date and event venue, organise speaker/s, prepare publicity and record the event for Blackboard.
Due: Weeks 7–11 at a day and time negotiated with your teacher

You are required to submit all assessment tasks in hard copy with a completed School of Media and Communication cover sheet. You are expected to keep a copy of all assignments submitted.
