This unit covers the competency to work safely in the financial services industry and follow sound occupational health practices at work.
It examines the legal framework; the requirements for policies and procedures, the obligations of the employer and employee, the roles of DWGs and OHS representatives.
The course also includes practical elements such as manual handling, computer safety, and risk assessment.

Details of Learning Activities
Each week students will be introduced to the legal theory related to each topic. Examples of the practical applications within industry will also be discussed.
Students will take an active role by completing risk assessments and evaluations, examining emergency procedures, analysing policies and procedures, filing incident/accident reports, demonstrating manual handling and applying workstation safety lists to workplace practices.

Overview of Assessment
To achieve competency in this course students must complete a number of assessment tasks.
1. A Hazard report that requires you to prepare a report identifying risk hazards in a workplace.
2. A Incident report that requires you to report a workplace incident using an appropriate reporting form and complying with health and safety procedures.
3. A Work Office case-study identifying hazards in a office environment.
Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met. Students will be provided with feedback throughout the course to check their progress.
Overview of Assessment
Throughout the semester students will be able to gauge their progress by completing and discussing class exercises. This formative feedback will highlight to students areas in which they may need to do more work to achieve competency.
Students must complete all assessments and achieve a CA (competency achieved) in each task to qualify for an overall pass in this course.
Students will be assessed via an oral exam during class time. Students will be asked to demonstrate their manual handling technique, their ability to use a workstation safely, their ability to follow emergency procedures, as well as their ability to manage stress.
If a student misses a test for any reason, they must complete a special consideration application. Please note that applications must be submitted through the online learning hub within 2 working days of the scheduled assessment.
It is expected that students will show their teacher the written receipt granting a deferred assessment as soon as it is received so it can be recorded.

If a student receives a NYC (not yet competent) for an assignment they have completed, they will be given the opportunity to re-submit the assignment to achieve a pass grade.
Students seeking an extension of seven calendar days or less from the original due date must complete an application for extension to time, available at level 13 reception. The application must be lodged with your teacher no later than one working day before the official due date, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
