Course Description

This course applies to workers with supervisory responsibilities for implementing and monitoring the organisation’s WHS policies, procedures and programs in a work area. Learners will be contributing well-developed skills in creating solutions to unpredictable problems through analysis and evaluation of information from a variety of sources.

2. Implement and monitor participation arrangements for managing WHS

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Communicate to workplace parties the importance of effective consultation mechanisms in managing health and safety risks in the workplace
2.2 Apply consultation procedures to facilitate participation of the work team in managing work area hazards
2.3 Promptly deal with issues raised through consultation, according to organisational consultation procedures and WHS legislative and regulatory requirements
2.4 Promptly record and communicate to the work team the outcomes of consultation over WHS issues


3. Implement and monitor organisational procedures for providing WHS training

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Identify WHS training needs according to organisational requirements, and WHS legislative and regulatory requirements
3.2 Make arrangements to meet WHS training needs of team members in consultation with relevant individuals
3.3 Provide workplace learning opportunities, and coaching and mentoring assistance, to facilitate team and individual achievement of identified WHS training needs
3.4 Identify and report to management the costs associated with providing training for work team, for inclusion in financial and management plans


4. Implement and monitor organisational procedures and legal requirements for identifying hazards and assessing and controlling risks

4.1 Identify and report on hazards in work area according to WHS policies and procedures, and WHS legislative and regulatory requirements
4.2 Promptly action team member hazard reports according to organisational procedures and WHS legislative and regulatory requirements
4.3 Implement procedures to control risks using the hierarchy of control, according to organisational and WHS legislative requirements

1.1 Accurately explain to the work team, relevant provisions of WHS Acts, regulations and codes of practice
1.2 Provide information about the organisation’s WHS policies, procedures and programs, and ensure it is readily accessible to and understandable by the work team
1.3 Regularly provide and clearly explain to the work team, information about identified hazards and the outcomes of risk assessment and control

Learning Outcomes

This course provides the skills and knowledge required to implement and monitor the organisation’s work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures and programs in the relevant work area in order to meet legislative requirements.

Details of Learning Activities

A range of learning activities are planned for this course including self-paced and collaborative class room based activities.

The self-based activities will be delivered through various technology platforms and will include quizzes, scenario case studies and interactive sessions.

The collaborative classroom based activities will include group discussion, group problem solving activities and opportunities to practice skills in a simulated workplace environment.

Overview of Assessment

Students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of a particular competency to be deemed competent. Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks.

Assessment will incorporate a variety of methods including assignments, journals, presentation and written or test. Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.

Assessment Tasks

This course has three assessments.  You must fully and successfully complete all assessments to be deemed competent in this unit.

Assessment Task 1 – WHS Risk Management Plan

Group or Individual: This assignment is to be completed individually

This assessment allows you to demonstrate your knowledge of risk management processes within the context of work health and safety.

You are required to prepare a WHS Risk Management plan.

Assessment Task 2 – WHS Process Improvement, Training Development and Delivery
Date handed out: Week 4
Date and time due: Weeks 11 & 12
Group or Individual: This is a group assessment to be completed in groups of no more than 4 persons.

This assessment allows you to implement risk control measures to effectively manage the risks that have been identified in your risk management plan.

There are two parts to this assessment – a risk treatment plan and training delivery.

Risk treatment plan
Referring to your risk management plans you are required to develop a risk treatment plan and identify and implement control measures for all risks. You should work off the risk management plans of all members in your group to ensure that all risks have been covered. The risk management plan should be no more than 2500 words but may include tables, charts, referencing and footnotes in addition to the word count.

Training delivery
Your risk control measures should include the delivery of training to staff and your group will be required to implement this through a training activity for the class. Your presentation and activity should last for 20 minutes.

The risk treatment plan should be submitted through Blackboard along with a copy of your training materials.

Assessment Task 3 – Report on WHS Process Improvements

Group or Individual: This is a group assessment to be completed in groups of no more than 4 persons.

This assessment allows you to implement risk control measures to effectively manage the risks that have been identified in your risk management plan.

You are required to deliver a report which reviews the success of your WHS process. The report should be not more than 1200 words.

Submission Requirements

 Assessment tasks must be submitted online through blackboard. 

You must:

  • Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date. If your performance in the assessment is affected by unexpected circumstances, you should consider applying for Special Consideration.
  • Retain a copy of your assessment tasks.
  • Complete, sign and submit a cover sheet with all work you submit for assessment, whether individual or group work. On the cover sheet you declare that the work you are presenting for assessment is your own work. An assignment cover sheet for submission of work for assessment is available on blackboard.
  • For group assignments - all group members must complete and sign the cover sheet. 
  • Each page of your assessment you should include footer with your name(s), student number(s), the title of the assessment, unit code and title and page numbers. For example, Julie Macpherson, 324567, Task 2, OHS2345C Ensure safe workplace, Page 1 of 10.

If you are found to be Not Yet Competent in an Assessment Task you will be allowed one resubmission to demonstrate competence. Your teacher will provide feedback regarding what you need to do to improve and will set a new deadline for the resubmission. The highest grade you will receive if your resubmission is successful is “CAG”.

Marking Guide (competency):
Vocational Education and Training (VET) is based on current industry needs and the focus on preparing you for the workplace. Because VET courses are informed by practical application of knowledge and skills, they are based on a system known as ‘competency based training’ (CBT). So when you are assessed in VET it is about whether you are competent to do the job, as well as having a firm grasp on the knowledge and skills required to do that job, as opposed to traditional curriculum based education settings that are often based on knowledge retention.

You need to demonstrate you are competent in each element of the unit of competency you are studying.

You will receive feedback on each assessment task that will inform you whether you are competent or not and how well you are performing. Once competent in all elements of the unit you receive a competency grading.

Marking Guide (Grading)
After achieving competency we then grade your performance in the unit; this gives you the opportunity to have the level of your performance formally recognized against industry standards and employability skills.

You will be provided with an assessment matrix in the assessments area of the unit blackboard shell.  Generally, your grading will be assessed against how well you demonstrate:

  • Perform the activities as required by the learning elements of this unit of competency.
  • Demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit of competency.
  • Execute the required skills for this unit of competency.
  • Demonstrate your employability skills through contribution to learning activities related to this assessment, timeliness, use of technology and teamwork.

Late Submissions

Students are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates. If a student is to be prevented from submitting an assessment item on time, by circumstances outside their control, they may apply in advance to the teacher for an extension to the due date of up to seven calendar days. To be eligible for an extension, you must lodge the extension form availabile at the following link with your teacher:

Where an extension of greater than seven days is needed, the student must apply for special consideration. Applications for special consideration must be submitted no later than two working days after the assessment task deadline or scheduled examination.
