Learning Outcomes
Details of Learning Activities
Learning activities for full-time students will include ’hands-on’ participation in a simulated business environment (a Virtual Enterprise) and on-line activities using self-paced resources on the RMIT online Learning Hub to develop both the underpinning skills and knowledge as well as capabilities in the practical application of this unit.
’What is a VE?
A Virtual Enterprise (VE) is a simulated business that participants organise and run as a hands-on way of learning about business practices and procedures, and most importantly, learning about their local businesses and industries.
These virtual businesses trade with each other across Australia, buying and selling virtual goods with virtual money. This activity replicates the real business economy, and results in a huge range of processes (such as marketing, purchasing, invoicing, organising salary payments, and paying regular electricity and phone bills) becoming second nature to the participants.
The "virtual" focus is important for two reasons. The lack of real money and real products means that participants are testing business procedures, practices and cultures that are based on their planning decisions, and that are not complicated by an undue initial focus on finding missing dollars!
Like most of the Australian workforce, our participants adapt quickly to their "online business" through using internet for promotions, purchase orders and receipts. They have the added advantage of understanding the "paper trail" by learning how to write chques, knowing the difference between invoices payable and receivable, and undertaking bank reconciliations.
VEs are mentored by a local business person who meets regularly with the participants, helping them with business planning, marketing strategies, staff management and other issues that regularly arise in work groups.’ (Downloaded from the Virtual Enterprise Australia website - 13/01/11)
How will the VE relate to this unit?
Your normal work tasks in your VE job role will involve not just doing your job, but also running an office and managing your time and other staff. This will often present you with competing demands on your time. You will open mail, manage appointments and diaries for VE personnel and do many other tasks as well. You will decide, with your teacher, what job roles you will take in the Virtual Enterprise. Acting in those roles, you will look for ways to improve the role to be more efficient and effective.
During your ’employment’ in the VE you will collect evidence against the elements/performance criteria for this unit. (You can find the elements/performance criteria at the top of this course guide.) For example, you will be required to develop both personal and group workplans and these can be included in a ’portfolio of evidence’ towards the assessment for this unit. (Full details of the evidence you are expected to collect is included in a separate Portfolio Sheet on the RMIT Learning Hub.)
Online Self-paced resources
As well as participating in the VE, you are expected to log on to the online RMIT Learning Hub and participate in weekly classes in order to develop your skills and knowledge for this unit. You will submit weekly activities to your personal online journal, which will form part of the portfolio of evidence.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment may incorporate a variety of methods including technical requirements documentation, homework, assignments, group and/or individual projects, in class exercises, written and practical assessments, problem solving exercises, presentations, direct observation of actual and simulated work practice, presentation of a portfolio of evidence which may comprise documents, and/or photographs and/or video and audio files, review of products produced through work-based or course activities.
Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met. Students will be provided with feedback throughout the course to check their progress.
Assessment Tasks
Portfolio of evidence - Virtual Enterprise - Part A
During the semester you will be ’employed’ in a simulated business (Reflective Records Virtual Enterprise). Your normal work tasks in your job role involve not just doing your job but running an office and managing your time and other staff, often with competing demands on your time. You will decide with your teacher what job roles you will take in the Virtual Enterprise. Acting in those roles you will look for ways to improve the role to be more efficient and effective.
While working in the Virtual Enterprise you will collect evidence each week for a portfolio - and this portfolio will serve as evidence of the skills you have developed. For example, you will prepare a workgroup plan, workplace skills audit and professional development needs sheet. (Please refer to the portfolio checklist available on the Learning Hub for this unit for full details on what to collect in your portfolio).
Observation of performance - Virtual Enterprise
While working in the Virtual Enterprise your facilitator will observe your performance against the elements and performance criteria for this unit. (The elements and performance criteria are listed at the top of this course guide.)
Competency achieved in the Virtual Enterprise will be graded according to the matrix below.
Portfolio of evidence - Online Activities - Part B
To support the practical work you are engaged in during your ’employment’ in the Virtual Enterprise, you will participate in weekly online classes, which will provide a theoretical perspective on the practical work you are engaged in. You are asked to submit portfolio items to a personal online journal (due on a weekly basis) on the RMIT Learning Hub. This will form Part B of your portfolio of evidence. (Portfolio Part B will be graded CA/NYC)
Please note: You must demonstrate competence in all elements to be deemed competent in this unit. A grade higher than CA can be gained only after competence has been demonstrated. Owing to the complex nature of this unit, you may be asked to demonstrate competence more than once.
Assessment Matrix
The critical aspects of assessment are a summary of the skills and knowledge you need to demonstrate competency in for this unit.
They are included here in a matrix so that you can see the relationship between the critical aspects and the assessments required.
