Course Description

The unit applies to identifying a range of materials used in the footwear industry. Materials include natural and synthetic materials, adhesives and components.

You will develop the skills and knowledge required when problem solving to identify types and characteristics of materials used in footwear production and identify common faults. Learning and self management skills are required to apply knowledge of footwear materials.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course you will have developed and applied the skills and knowledge required to demonstrate competency in the above elements.

Details of Learning Activities

Integrated learning consisting of theory and practical components carried out in practical workshops, in a simulated workplace environment, in the skills and knowledge required to develop custom-made footwear product.

Teaching Schedule

Weeks 1 – 18
Practical workshops to identify materials used in footwear productionwill be conducted in conjunction with other practical based learning. Workshops will include identifying and working with a wide range of materials used in footwear production. Students will be required to demonstrate their knowledge and practical skills required to Identify materials used in footwear production. Learning will include identifying and using & working with a range of materials and components used in footwear manufacture, including identifying falts in materials and appropriate way to prevent or rectifiy qulity issues with finished product. including in the learning program will be identifying appropriiate suppliers of raw materials for in an Australian context. Identify materials used in footwear production will be carried out during the development of the following pairs of shoes:
Week 1-5 Development of Court Shoe - 1Pair
Week 6-12 Development of Derby Shoe - 1Pair
Week 13-18 Development of Oxford Shoe - 1Pair

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is ongoing throughout the semester and will consist of both theory and practical based exercises, predominantly in class but some out of class research and information formatting is required as well. Feedback will be provided throughout the semester on all assessment tasks.

All assessment tasks must be completed before competency can be achieved. Tasks that have not be authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is encouraged.

If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or the Disability Liaison Unit if you would like to find out more.

Your course assessment conforms to RMIT assessment principles, regulations, policies, procedures and instructions which are available for review online: http://www.rmit.edu.au/students/assessment

Assessment Tasks

Student will demonstrate and answer relevant questions regarding the knowledge and skills required to identify materials used in footwear production to a competent standard.

Student will submit for assessment a minimum of 2 pairs of shoes (students choose which two of the three shoe styles they make to be assessed). Shoes to be produced to a required industry standard, included in the production of these shoes, student will demonstrate how to identify & use materials used in footwear production.
