Course Description
In this unit you will develop the knowledge and skills required to assess a range of client issues and refer appropriately.

Details of Learning Activities
On completion of this unit, the worker will be able to respond appropriately to clients that have a range of issues outside and in addition to the area of immediate focus, expertise or interests of the worker and their organisation. For instance, a child protection worker may need to identify when alcohol and other drug issues are important in the life of a presenting client.
Completion of the unit will also provide the worker with competence to make decisions as to whether to refer or retain the client
Placement is a major part of this competency. There are two blocks throughout 2012 (May and June - July) and students wil also need to complete some placement on the days they are not in class to complete teh rquired number of hours by the end of the course. Classes for this competency are held throughout the year.
Teaching Schedule
This unit is predominantly delivered through the placement blocks (2) and general placement. Students will attend classes throughout the year for this class as part of their Professional Development classes. These are sandwhiched around the placement blocks.

Overview of Assessment
This unit forms a major part of the practical placement component of this qualification. Assessment is undertaken within the work environment. Students are required to assess their own level of competency during their placement period which is then discussed and confirmed with their workplace supervisor and placement coordinator.
Assessment Tasks
Students will be required to answer the following using 400 - 600 words.
- Provide an example of the referral process used in one of your placement agencies.
- How is the effectiveness of a referral evaluated?
By doing this students will demonstrate an understanding of how an agency works with its clients to assess their needs and provide effective support in a holistic way.
