Course Description

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required to provide support for individuals who are experiencing loss, grief and bereavement

Details of Learning Activities

You will be given an opportunity to take part in a variety of activities –practical and theoretical. These activities are designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge required to provide support and care relating to loss and grief. The learning activities for this course are a combination of theoretical and practical tasks undertaken in-class and during placement.


Teaching Schedule

This course is scheduled to be delivered in semester two however you may commence placement during semester one. A timetable outlining specific times and dates will be given to you during semester one.

Overview of Assessment

There are a variety of tools used to assess this course including two hundred (200) hours of practical placement providing you with opportunities to develop and demonstrate the skills knowledge and attitude required.
Other assessment tasks may involve:

  • Short essays where you will be expected to write an answer to a question in detail, and to draw conclusions about issues.
  • Class presentation where you will be expected to conduct a brief session in class, to lead discussion and to provide information for other students.
  • Participation in class discussions and activities.
  • Reflective Journals you will be expected to provide a written record of your experiences during the year - in class and in practical placement.
  • Blackboard/On-line assessment you will participate in regular on-line forums, blogging and small assessment tasks.


Assessment Tasks

The assessments for this unit is undertaken during placement. Specific details on the assessment task is made available to you in the practical placement manual. This manual will be given to you during orientation.
