Course Description

This unit defines the competency required to Determine and confirm client business expectations as prescribed in the ICA11 Information and Communications Training Package.
When you undertake this unit you will develop the ability to gather, identify and record client business requirements, and to verify that the information is accurate, relevant and complete.
The outcome of the unit is for you to be able to gather information to determine business system requirements to meet a client’s expectations and needs.

1.5 Submit documentation to appropriate person for substantiation

Learning Outcomes


This course will be part of two clusters of courses involving an integrated assignment and an integrated project.
The integrated assignment, Introduction to Business Networks, will involve a cluster of six (6) courses, viz.:

  • ICAICT401A Determine and confirm client business requirements
  • ICANWK402A Install and configure virtual machines for sustainable ICT
  • ICANWK409A Create scripts for networking
  • ICAPMG401A Support small scale IT projects
  • ICTTEN4198A Install, configure and test an internet protocol network
  • ICTTEN4199A Install, configure and test a router

The integrated project, Network Project Management, will form part of the learning and training for the courses within a cluster of seven (7) courses. Courses within the cluster are:

  • ICAICT401A Determine and confirm client business requirements
  • ICANWK401A Install and manage a server
  • ICANWK404A Install, operate and troubleshoot a small enterprise branch network
  • ICANWK407A Install and configure client-server applications and services
  • ICANWK411A Deploy software to networked computers
  • ICAPMG401A Support small scale IT projects
  • ICCTEN5200A Install, configure and test a local area network switch

Activities in this course aim to develop your communication skills in negotiating with clients and stakeholders and to introduce you to project management skills and tasks. You will work as part of a team to ascertain the needs and expectations of a client in developing a project.

The activities aim to enhance your understanding and knowledge in determining and clarifying business problems, their scope and the means of gathering information about the cause of the problem and the possible solution to that problem.

Through class and work-based observation, activities and assignment you will:

  • Learn how to ascertain and clarify what a client’s needs or problems are
  • Learn how to gather information from a client and various sources
  • Develop solutions for the identified problem or need
  • Gather information to establish the system requirements and problems
  • Confirm and document system specifications for client approval 


Details of Learning Activities

Activities in this course are aimed at enabling you to understand the method of determining a business problem, develop some skills in gathering information and to document and confirm the business needs.

An assignment, class pracs and classroom and one-on-one discussion are part of the learning activities, as well as work-based experiences and activities.

The Internet and YouTube videos will be used as a learning tool and a resource for students to seek and locate relevant information.
Learning activities may be modified during the semester to meet the needs of students in the current program and the needs of their workplace.

Overview of Assessment

Your assessment will involve a range of activities and assessment tasks.

To this end, assessment will involve both in-class and work-based elements. It will involve observation of your understanding, knowledge and practice of the elements in both the theoretical and practical environment.

You will work in a team on a range of activities leading to the production of an integrated assignment and an integrated project. The major part of your assessment will be in these integrated tasks.

You must be competent in all elements to successfully complete the course.
