Course Description

In this course, you will look at the use of creative thinking techniques and the role of experimentation and primary design research in 2 dimensional design. Part of this process will be the production of preliminary sketches and peer assessment.

Students will enhance their photographs from the excursion. They will then print and trace, then transfer to lino. During this class students will also be given feedback on their poster and opportunities to resubmit for the folio.

Students will submit their folio photos as part of the evidence of competency for this course. Students will submit one nominated 2D design created in another course (or outside the program) as part of their folio of evidence, as well as their lino print.

A range of learning resources and references are provided throughout the year. Additional information relating to this will be provided on an ongoing basis. A digital resource folder resides on network server. Further information regarding access to this is available in the ‘Computer Survival Kit’ provided during orientation.

You will require a personal storage device and tools as outlined in tool kit list.

Amongst the library’s electronic resources is the ability to access Lynda.com for online tutorials and lessons. You may be given these tutorials (and other resources) to supplement your classroom learning.

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems and access to specialised facilities and relevant software. You will also have access of the library resources.

Some equipment can be provided, e.g. DSLR cameras.

Students are encouraged to independently research to extend their skills using the library.


Overview of Assessment

Assessment is on-going throughout the course. Assessment will incorporate a range of methods to assess performance and the application of knowledge and skills and will practical tasks and projects.
Assessment tasks are:
Project 1 50%
Project 2 50%

Assessment Tasks

Tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Feedback throughout the course may be written, verbal or a combination of both.
Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks and you should engage in all formative tasks.
This course has 1 Summative Task. All assessment tasks must be completed/submitted to a satisfactory level – there will be opportunities to resubmit. You are required to demonstrate all learning outcomes to a satisfactory standard.

Formative Task 1: Photoshop exercises

Short exercises on software that form part of your feedback

Formative Task 2: Poster

Experiments in capturing and manipulating images and combining them with text to convey a feeling. Due week 11

Formative Task 3: Lino Print

Print making and the impact of materials on communication. Due week 17

Summative Task 1: Folio

All formative tasks plus the students’ choice of work from other classes are re-presented and incorporate any response to feedback. Due week 19 

At the completion of the course, grading will be offered in addition to, and after, competency based assessment.
