This course is delivered and assessed in conjunction GRAP5337 Graphic design techniques and VART6279 Realise a creative project.

Course Description

In this unit you will develop the skills and knowledge required to use typography techniques in design work. It includes a general knowledge of typography and its application to different design briefs.

1.1 With reference to briefing documentation, clarify design requirements for typographic work in consultation with relevant personnel

1.4 Take account of the requirements for different publication processes when planning work
1.5 Set up work space and equipment with due regard to safety considerations and organisational procedures

2.1 Identify possible approaches to typography design and establish criteria for the selection of a final approach
2.2 Select appropriate materials, tools and equipment for the testing of approaches and techniques

2.4 Evaluate trialling against criteria and select the preferred design approach

3.1 Develop the typographic work ensuring consistency with the selected approach and the brief

Details of Learning Activities

Learning activities will take place in a studio, workshop or classroom using industry standard tools and resources. You will complete exercises and industry style projects. You will also be required to undertake independent study.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is on-going throughout the course. Assessment will incorporate a range of methods to assess performance and the application of knowledge and skills and will include tasks and projects.

Assessment tasks are:
Type project 1A - Magazine 50%
Type project 2A - Music event branding 50%

An assessment charter summarises your responsibilities as an RMIT student as well as those of your teachers.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment activities in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment outcomes. Summative assessment project/s in this unit are graded. To demonstrate competency in this course you need to engage in the assessment activities to a competent standard.

2 x tasks (Formative)
Task 1 Type/GD: Development of typographic logos/branding for Project 1GD - Music Event branding. Due in Week 4
Task 2 Type/GD: Development of layout designs that utilize text and image and apply formatting conventions. Due in Week 14.
1 x project (Summative)
Project 2 Type: The creation of a publication/s designs and publicity materials for a film/theatrical production. Due in Week 19.

You will receive feedback with verbal and/or written evaluation of your progress within class time. The submitted work will be assessed with written feedback as well as a quality indicator that relates to separate components of each brief and the overall outcome. At the completion of the course, grading will be offered in addition to, and after, competency based assessment.
