Course Description

The purpose of this module is to increase the student’s knowledge of the sustainable development and environmental issues that affect youth around the world. It will also provide skills that will enable the student  to contribute to the positive change in the present state of the environment. It will also enable the student to lead and support group activities that will help to promote environmentally sustainable development.


Learning Outcomes


Students will study the following topics:
1.  Understanding our environment
2.  The social environment and the natural environment
3.. What is sustainable development?
4.  Action for sustainable development.


Details of Learning Activities

At this end of this module you will be able to:

Outline key concepts related to the natural environment and its associated problems

  • identify key social, economic and political factors contributing to environmental problems
  • explain the concept of sustainable development
  • describe various approaches to environmental protection and sustainable development around the world,including Agenda 21
  • identify key concepts related to the natural environment and its associated problems.
  • evaluate the opportunites and practical approaches provided by a range of agencies
  • lead actvities with groups of young people to develop their knowlege and understanding of environmental and sustainable  development issues
  • work with a youth group to design and undertake an environmental/sustainable development-related project
  • design a project that gives clear expression to the principles of sustainable development
  • evaluate projects in terms of their contribution to sustainable development


Teaching Schedule

This  module is usually  undertaken during the second year of study.  It is anticipated that it will take seven weeks to complete.

The assesment tasks for ths module are:

  • Learning Journal - students are to complete and submit the self-help questions and the activities that are located throughout the units for this module
  • a 1750 word written report that records the intitiation, design, delivery and evaluation of an environmental or sustainable development project you have undertaken with a group of young people.
