Course Description

To provide learners with a knowledge of the characteristics and quality standards of building materials commonly used in residential scale buildings and to enable students to make informed selections of these materials.

Learning Outcomes

This course will provide the learner to develop knowledge & skills and able to:
• Describe the properties, quality standards, testing, performance and visual characteristics of commonly used residential building materials in accordance with acceptable standards of construction, relevant sections of The Building Code of Australia and applicable Australian Standards.
• Investigate and select suitable materials for either typical residential scale buildings or for a residential scale building project studied in conjunction with other modules, serviceability, appearance, compatibility, cost and fire resistance.
• Describe how the manufacture/conversion process effects the properties of building materials.
• Describe defects in materials, short and long term degradation of materials, timber preservation and protection of metals.
• Describe methods of materials transportation, site handling and site storage.
• Identify samples of building materials commonly used in residential scale buildings.
• Solve on-site problems which can commonly occur with building materials used in residential scale buildings.
