Course Description

In this course students develop a range of approaches to artistic problems using differing methods, materials and techniques.

Studio & Material Studies is a compulsory course within the first year of the program. The course enables students to acquire skills in basic design and introduces the Photoshop computer program.

Details of Learning Activities

Studio and Materials introduces students to the principles and elements of basic design in both traditional art practice and using computer-generated imagery (Photoshop program).
Course delivery is in the form of :
•    Lectures and practical demonstrations
•    Studio practice
•    Tutorial discussions
•    Class discussions
•    Individual tuition


Teaching Schedule

Students are presented with three ‘Workshops’ and three ‘Projects’ for each semester.
Tasks range from traditional collage making and producing colour theory samples in acrylic, to computer based imagery using the ‘Photoshop’ computer program.

Overview of Assessment

Folio presentation marked by a panel, with written response.


Assessment Tasks

A folio is presented at the end of semester one. The workshops are assessed in digital form by the Studio teacher and the projects are marked by a panel.
Students who complete a satisfactory first semester’s ‘Studio and Materials’ folio will receive a PX (Pass).
Students who fail to satisfactorily complete semester 1 will submit the entire folio for the semester 2 assessment.
A final graded mark for ‘Studio and Materials’ will be given at the end of semester two.

An overall written response is including in the assessment under the headings of ‘Conceptual/Critical skills’, Technical Skills, and ‘Studio Practice & Personal Objectives’.

Assessment Criteria:
i.     Working within the parameters of each Workshop and Project ‘Brief’ and ‘Aim’
ii.    Understanding and application of various basic design principles
iii.   Understanding and application of various Photoshop techniques
iv.   Development of ideas suitable to a Visual Art context
v.    Completion of all Workshops and Projects
vi.   The degree of class participation with the Project.
