Course Description

This course introduces students to cultural, societal, professional and institutional contexts relevant to carrying out paraprofessional interpreting practice in their pair of languages to enable them to comprehend messages in oral interpreting discourse, make appropriate linguistic (lexis, grammar, collection, register) choices, and to achieve accurate and impartial transfer of meaning across their pair of languages.

Learning Outcomes


Students are required to develop the following competencies:

1. Prepare effectively for interpreting dialogues.
2. Educate participants to effectively work with an interpreter.
3. Solve problems arising from cultural/societal differences.
4. Solve problems arising from the institutional imperatives under which the professional client may be operating.
5. Employ effective self-directed learning strategies to continuously upgrade knowledge and skills.


Overview of Learning Activities


Details of Learning Activities

Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials, group work and workshops.

Planned learning experiences include:

1. Introductions by the teachers, running parallel in English and the LOTE, of the basic cultural and societal characteristics of Australia and the LOTE country.

2. Self-directed research individually, in pairs or in groups, using specified contextual parameters provided by the teacher, in one domain relevant to paraprofessional interpreting practice in English, and in another domain in the LOTE.

3. Workshops and class discussions using the findings of the research outlined in 2 (above), with the specific aim of comparing/contrasting aspects of the Australian and LOTE cultures relevant to paraprofessional interpreting practice.

4. Lectures/presentations by guest lecturers as determined by the teacher and who may have particular expertise in aspects of Australian or LOTE country culture and society, particularly relevant to paraprofessional interpreting practice.


Teaching Schedule

Students will be provided with a program calendar outlining a series of weekly themes/topics that form a foundation for study and practice.
The calendar will also indicate timing of each assessment activity.
