Details of Learning Activities

Students will learn about the various stages in a launching a drama production, including development, pre-production, production and postproduction.  Classes will include lectures, practical exercises, workshopping, research, and working through the developmental, shooting and postproduction phases of actual writers’ works.  This will include working with the writers.

Assessment Tasks

1.    5-minute presentation of a current film in release or tv drama review, David and Margaret style.  Content, “look”, production value, script, direction, acting and other appropriate aspects should be considered in the review.  It’s suggested that if students aren’t familiar with David Stratton and Margaret Pommeranz, they should start watching At The Movies, 10 p.m., Wednesday evenings on the ABC (repeated Sundays at 6 p.m.  Extra marks will be given for interesting David and Margaret costume and hair/beard styles. Students will be paired off by teacher.
Outcome is for students to gain awareness and knowledge of drama productions.
One review per week up to shooting period in 2nd half of semester

2.    Weekly in-class exercises

Outcome is to review material currently being learnt each week.

3.    Workshop exercises on team projects
Outcome is to review the various stages of preproduction.
Loading:  10%


4.    Team and self-assessment.  Assessment forms will be handed out to students on 28-30 March and on 6-8 June.  These forms are to be completed in class.
Outcome is for a student to reflect on how s/he is progressing, what areas they could improve upon, how they feel they are working within a team, etc.
Loading:  10% overall


5.    Production of up to 4 mins of tv or film single-cam. drama, comprising maximum 3 scenes, from script material provided.  Aim is to work together as a cohesive drama production team, to work to schedule and budget.  Fine cuts will be screened and assessed weeks 16 – 17.
Outcome is to successfully work in a drama production team to a specific project, budget and timeline.
