Course Description

This course covers the co-ordination of all aspects of installing and dismantling small exhibitions.

Contribute to the development of draft exhibition design

Performance Criteria:

- The design concept is clarified taking into account aesthetic considerations, visitor response, environment, collection requirements, transport and handling needs, location and time frame.

- Stragegies for promoting and marketing the exhibition are put in train and community liason is planned

- Operation of the exhibition is planned, including visitor pathways, maintenance and security needs, associated activities, publications and graphics display.


Coordinate dismantling the exhibition

Performance Criteria:

- Plans are made and agreed with relevant personnel for the dismantling of the exhibition.

- Details of resourses, facilities and procedures are clarified and agreed with all relevant personnel.

- Dismantling proceeds according to plan, unexpected events and problems are corrected and resolved promptly.

- Objects and hardware are returned to appropriate locations.

- Files, documents and records are updated and amended as required.

- Site is restored to required conditions.


Coordinate installation of exhibition

Performance Criteria:

- Plans are made and agreed with the relevant personnel for the installation of the exhibition.

- Security and safety of objects is maintained and prompt corrective action is taken in the event of accidents and unforseen circumstances.

- Objects are moved and handled in accordance with current best practice.

- Associated graphics, signs, lighting, sound and special effects are installed according to agreed specifications.

- Resourse constraints and safety considerations are met.


Determine and clarify exhibition purpose, aims and rationale

Performance Criteria:

- Agreement is reached on exhibition’s subject matter, style, objects to be used and where possible the intended audience experience.

- Agreed purpose, aims, rationale and objectives are feasible in terms of time, locale and resource constraints.


Refine and finalise plans

Performance Criteria:

- Draft proposals are discussed with relevant personnel and ammended as necessary.

- Availability of all resources, objects, site materials, environmental controls, contractors and staff is confirmed.

Overview of Assessment

This competency is co-assessed with BUSM 9909C and will be assessed during action learning and project activities over two exhibitions during the academic year. Practice and assessment occurs at the mid-year Furnitex exhibition with final assessment occurring during the setting up and break down of the student’s final year show.

  • ’Planning and Review’ document of the Furnitex show demonstrating student participation in organising and running of the show.
  • Full planning and installation documentation of the end of year furniture exhibition.
