Course Description

This course covers the skills and knowledge required for the development and presentation of garment design concepts to the client within specified enterprise guidelines.

a. All items and resources required for the range/garment are checked and confirmed.

Learning Outcomes


In this unit Students will:
1. Research fashion trends identifying market categories, themes, colours/texture/fabrics and garment types and details
2. Work in a team or consult with peers on design concepts
3. Apply advanced trade sketching techniques including design specifications to industry standards
4. Apply advanced presentation skills when preparing range concepts and specifications
5. Demonstrate use of both manual and CAD techniques
6. Consider point of sale/price point constraints when designing and prepare relevant specifications
7. Work to design brief requirements including point of sale/price point constraints
8. Develop presentation techniques for specialist fashion categories including men’s and children’s wear.


Details of Learning Activities

Teaching Schedule

Week 1
Introduce course; weekly outline; work checkpoints and assessment. Overview of design brief. Design exercises – Review trade sketching -Trade sketches from a pattern. Sketching pattern pieces from a sketch; fashion image; garment.
Week 2
Introduction of Hempel International Design contest. Design exercises – Review figure drawing - Presentation techniques and layout. Developing a new/up-dated figure/fashion features. Illustrating designs on the figure.
Week 3
Design exercises - Rendering up-date includes -pattern and textured fabrics using different media: wash and pencil, wash and wax crayon, markers and fine liner.
Week 4
Design exercises - Planning colourways and fabric co-ordination for a small range/collection. Preparing and presenting fabric boards and trim boards
Week 5
Research (out-of-class/off-campus TBA) Trends research. Fabric research. Research theme and collect fabric samples to show the following week.
Week 6
Research findings - Review Hempel International Design contest. Designing/confirming design timeline; research discussion- show research/show development ideas and fabric/col. swatches for competition designs.
Week 7
Design development. Range/collection designing preparation.
Week 8
Melbourne Spring Fashion Week - Design activity (TBC)
Week 9
Fabric/colour Development. Finalising fabric selection and presentation.
Week 10
In-class presentation - Present your work to the class for feedback.
Week 11
Refining of Designs; fabrics and colours.
Week 12
Trade sketches and Design specifications. Finalised.
Week 13
Illustrations. Trial and select media and presentation layout for range.
Week 14
Final in-class presentation - Present your work to the class for assessment.

Overview of Assessment

Tasks that have not been authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is necessary to demonstrate that you can:
Produce advanced accurate trade sketches and presentation drawings by following design brief.
• Producing templates for specialist fashion categories including children’s and menswear.
• Use a variety of media, techniques, formates and presentation styles to professional standards.
• Complete research project in fashion trends.
• Explore the use of computer aided design as a media for presentation to industry standards.
• Written design rationale as required.
• Produce accurate garment design specifications.
• Produce costing specifications.
• Participate in the presentation of garment designs to a group as required.


Assessment Tasks

Students will complete progressive written and sketched exercises, class participation and submit
Assignments on time. Please check Weekly planner for due dates.

Classwork: Drawing garment from sample garment (5%); Drawing garment from pattern pieces (5%); Fashion figure development (5%); Rendering Techniques (5%); Colourways (5%) = 25%

Design Brief/Final Assessment: 75%
