Course Description

This course covers the skills and knowledge required to prepare and confirm workplace procedures for use in a TCF enterprise.

Learning Outcomes


Students will develop the skills and knowledge required in:
1. Developing procedures and manuals by means of appropriate collation, sequencing and revision of specifications (and related information)
2. Evaluation of the effectiveness of specifications and procedures through the application of assessment techniques.
3. Collection and presentation of information by means of computer software and other appropriate methods.


Details of Learning Activities

1. You will be using various resources, including the internet, to collect information necessary for the development of industry standard garment specifications.

2. The information will be collated in reports using computer software such as Microsoft Excel and Adobe Illustrator and presented.

3. Develop an understanding of Employability Skills and integrating them a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) in creative practice contexts.


Teaching Schedule

Topic 1

Weeks 1 -3
Introduction and course overview: Including the use, data research and assessment feedback within the BlackBoard shell.

Identification and collation of information that may be needed in a spec manual


Topic 2

Weeks 4 -6
Revision of basic formatting, Excel, Word.
Development of a book with suppliers of trims and components including examples of products.


Topic 3

Weeks 7-10
Development of labelling & packaging specification pack.

Overview of Assessment

Tasks that have not been authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is necessary to demonstrate that you can:

1. Follow correct Occupational Health and Safety procedures
2. Collect information necessary for the development of procedures / manuals that are in accordance with workplace requirements
3. Carry out trials in order to evaluate any changes to specifications / procedures
4. Collate recorded information and present findings in accordance with workplace practices such as: use of Power Point presentations at formal meetings; use of common software (Word and Excel) or other specific software in the preparation of reports to management and in the development of manuals.



Assessment Tasks

Tasks that have not been authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is necessary.

Written Report  - A research assignment that will set the context of the Specifications B course and assist in finding information for the second and third assignments. 15%

Specifications manual  - A research assignment to assist in becoming more familiar with the uses, availability and cost of different garment trims. 40%

Specification Pack  - A research assignment to develop a manual (A4 size) that shows clear instructions about how to finish and package a garment range. 45%
