Course Description

This unit covers the competency to work safely in the financial services industry and follow sound occupational health practices at work.

Performance Criteria:

• Health and safety procedures are applied at all times when carrying out daily work routines in the workplace.
• Safe practices for working with computers and other screen based equipment are followed at all times.
• Work is conducted within ergonomic guidelines.
• Hazard warning and safety signs are recognised and observed.
• All hazardous materials and equipment are handled in accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines and specified safe handling guidelines.
• Safe manual handling techniques and safe equipment operation techniques are employed at all times.
• Work areas are kept clean and free from obstacles.

Performance Criteria:

• Hazards in the work area are recognised and reported to appropriate people following workplace procedures.

• Workplace emergency first aid procedures are followed.

Details of Learning Activities

Case studies are used throughout the course and students are expected to participate in class discussions and exercises. The use of ‘real world’ examples will assist students throughout the course.

• Demonstrating correct manual handling technique
• Responding to generic question sessions
• Reporting OH&S findings
The use of “real world” examples will facilitate the understanding of the theoretical concepts and students will be encouraged to use lateral thinking.

Students will be provided with more than one opportunity to demonstrate competence. Competency based assessment is detailed below in “Assessment Methods” and “Assessment Tasks”.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment may include navigating around a virtual office, completing incident and accident reports, assessing hazards, evaluating workstations, and/or delivering group presentations on subjects such as ergonomics and workplace violence.
Tutorial activities may also include problem solving and responding to case studies.
The aim is to provide students with the opportunity for formative feedback to help them determine areas for improvement.
