This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to identify fabric performance and handling requirements.

Learning Outcomes


The unit applies to fabrics used to produce garments and accessories and includes skills and knowledge required to guide the use and handling of fabrics. It includes sourcing information from reference material and industry specialists as well as conducting simple tests to identify fabric types and properties. Identification methods and tests covered by this unit are those where the procedure has already been determined and the range of outcomes established.

Discuss fabric faults. Pilling, fading, shrinkage ect.

Fabric testing requirements.
Look at Australian standards
Discuss the use of blue and grey scales.
View Textile testing DVD

Select Knitted and Woven Fabrics for testing.
Calculate fabric weight, sett and structure
Week 4
Prepare samples according to standards for testing.
Colourfastness tests. Dimensional stability

Continue testing fabrics and record results.
Stretch recovery and pilling

Continue testing fabrics and record results
Seam slippage tests.

Overview of Assessment

Tasks that have not be authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is necessary. Assessment will consist of both theory and practical based exercises, predominantly in class but some out of class research and information formatting is required as well.
You will be given further information about the assessment tasks in class.


Assessment Tasks

1. Fabric Performance Testing 30% :- Students will be required to conduct standard tests on two given fabrics and report on the results.
2. Fabric specification 10% :- Complete a specification for a given yarn and fabric. Oral presentation in class.
3. Care and Content labelling assignment 30% :- Demonstrate the ability to select a range of labels in accordance with Australian Standards.
4. Dyeing Questionnaire 10% :- View Textile Colouration Video and complete a questionnaire.
5. Dyeing report 10-% :- Report on results achieved when different fabrics are dyed with a range of dyes.
6. Fibre and Fabric Finishes 10% :- Research a given finishing process and present findings to class.
