Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to apply screen printing techniques used to produce screen print designs on textiles.

Details of Learning Activities

This course is delivered in a studio / workshop environment. A range of learning activities and tasks have been designed to allow students to demonstrate competency.
Please note - not all learning activities are assessment tasks, participants will be advised well in advance if an assessment is taking place.

Many materials used in this course will be covered by a materials fee and handed out in class. Eg fabric, paper, pigment, binder etc, but it is essential that you have a personal kit as well. This class requires a basic set of equipment that must be bought to and used in class. Please make sure you are equipped with these materials at the beginning of the program.

Overview of Assessment

Overview of graded assessment for Prepare Stencils and Screens:
To achieve successful completion of this course students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of competency.
Assessment tasks have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner.

Assessment will incorporate a variety of methods including:
Students will be awarded a grade only if competency has been demonstrated within the standard enrolment period on the first assessment attempt.

Units assessed as ‘not yet competent’ on a first assessment attempt and ‘competent’ on a second or subsequent attempt are to have results amended to competent but are not eligible for grading.

Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher.
All work must be submitted by the due date. Late submission will not be graded higher than a PASS.


Assessment Tasks

Floral swatch book - 40%
This project will enable students to develop swatches for printed textiles, use print techniques to achieve design effects, and determine appropriate stencil types and media for desired textile samples. The finished project will be in the form of a professional swatch book and process documentation in a technical file.

Length Repeat - 40%
Design and print a 1 colour length repeat.
The aim of this project is to learn about the technical considerations involved with printing a repeat pattern.

Research Assignment - 20%
This task requires students to undertake research on printing processes and practices and present findings to the class. This will enable participants to identify different print techniques used in the past and also techniques used in industry today.

Other Information

Produce screen printed textiles is the second print unit undertaken in the Diploma of Textile Design and Development. This unit is studio based, incorporating some theory and many practical exercises. The exercises will enable participants to gain a sound understanding of basic processes and techniques associated with producing screen printed textiles

The course is run over an 8 week period. So keep in mind that session 1 and 2 is held on one day, morning and afternoon. This intensive mode of learning allows for longer periods of studio access. However, this also means that it’s essential that every class is attended.
