Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge associated with developing textile designs and specifications for production and the testing and analysis associated with developing design specifications. Textile material and products for which product specifications are developed in the textile sector include fibres, fabrics, yarns and finished products.

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Appropriate formulas for calculating yarn requirements are determined
3.2 Calculations are undertaken using computer software or manual processes
3.3 Data is analysed and yarn requirements are assessed
3.4 Yarn requirements are documented

4 Test sample

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Textile sample is produced according to design specifications and OH&S practices
4.2 Sample is examined and accuracy of calculations determined
4.3 Production process is analysed to determine improvements
4.4 Routine testing of sample is undertaken to assess quality requirements and to ensure industry standards are met
4.5 Results of sample testing are analysed to determine performance and acceptability for production
4.6 Outcomes are documented and discussed with client and appropriate personnel and feedback is recorded

5 Prepare product specifications

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Sample analysis is applied to develop pattern specifications for textile design
5.2 Production processes including technical aspects are determined and production plans prepared
5.3 Final product specifications are confirmed with appropriate personnel and all documentation is completed

Details of Learning Activities

This is a studio based course. Sessions will be held in the computer labs and in the design studios in a simulated workplace environment.
You will undertake research into design briefs and then develop collections in response to the brief.
Projects will incorporate Industry briefs and the production of samples and textile products in elective units .

Students will  be provided with a range of mediums and art paper, mount board  to develop design concepts

A option of  maximum of 3 A2 digital prints will be provided.


Overview of Assessment

To achieve successful completion of this course students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of competency.

Assessment tasks have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner.

Assessment will incorporate a variety of methods including:

  • Submission and presentation of Project Briefs and Folios
  • Technical folders and documentation
  • Oral and writtenpresentations

Details of Assessment will be provided with project biref in class sessions

Students will be awarded a grade only if competency has been demonstrated within the standard enrolment period on the first assessment attempt.
Units assessed as ‘not yet competent’ on a first assessment attempt and ‘competent’ on a second or subsequent attempt are to have results amended to competent but are not eligible for grading.

Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher.
All work must be submitted by the due date.
Late submissions will not be graded higher than a PASS.
