Course Description

This course covers the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to edit screen content for fast turnaround using non-linear editing facilities.

1 Prepare for edit.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Clarify editing requirements in consultation with
relevant production personnel and with reference
to documentation as required.
1.2 Check operation of editing equipment and
software, and ensure sufficient supplies of
consumables are available.
1.3 Identify and prepare source materials for off-line
and online editing.
1.4 Assess materials to be edited for required technical
and creative criteria in consultation with relevant
production personnel.
1.5 Endeavour to visualise completed edit with
reference to available materials.

2 Commence editing process.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Digitise and transfer materials to suitable format,
ensuring compatibility with editing equipment and
monitoring capture for sound and image quality.
2.2 Where appropriate, create an edit decision list
(EDL) subject to time constraints, noting accurately
in and out points for each edit.
2.3 Maintain accurate documentation of editing
instructions for use in all stages of post-production
as required.
2.4 Prioritise and select materials in terms of their
relevance to meet production requirements.
2.5 Arrange and present selected material to retain the
intended meaning of words and images.
2.6 Analyse and plan how preselected additional materials are to be used to clarify and enhance final
edit.

3 Assemble vision and sound.

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Check technical and creative criteria with relevant
production personnel to ensure integrity of edit.
3.2 Assemble content in a way that produces coherent
images and sound according to standard editing
conventions.
3.3 Ensure that assembled materials meet time
requirements for productions, as well as technical
and creative criteria for transmission.
3.4 Insert transitions, special effects and preselected
additional materials as required.
3.5 Make appropriate compromise between content and
quality in order to meet time restrictions.
3.6 Review assembled online or off-line edit with
relevant production personnel.
3.7 Implement changes as specified and finalise edit to
meet deadlines.

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Complete necessary documentation and file/archive
source materials according to enterprise
procedures
4.2 Report problems in completing edits to meet
production requirements.
4.3 Provide information required for successful
transmission of edited material.
4.4 Evaluate own performance against technical and
creative criteria and discuss with colleagues where
appropriate.

EDITING WEEKLY BREAKDOWN 2009

9th February – Principles of Editing, Introduction to Final Cut Pro.

16th February – Storyboarding & framing for edit: Breakdown a script and storyboard exercise.

23rd February – Importing and exporting files, editing a sequence, basic sound adjustments and editing. Editing to voice over: Commercial exercise.

2nd March – FCP Preferences, System settings and A/V settings. Visual Language and montage: Documentary exercise.

9th March – LABOUR DAY

16th March – Codecs, sound levels, generators and the file manager. Rhythm and Timing: Sequence exercise. Timing & Edit Techniques: Dialogue exercise.

23rd March – Fine Tuning a rough edit – Filters, tools and the master sound controller.

30th March – Log and batch capture, print to video and exporting.

6th April – Building and burning a DVD in DVD Studio Pro. 

Submit all in class exercises.


13th April – EASTER

20th April – SHOOTING FOR EDIT
27th April – SHOOTING FOR EDIT

4th May – Log and batch capture. Begin structuring a rough cut.

11th May – Structuring a rough cut – Individual consultations about sequence structure.

18th May – Fine Tuning a rough edit.

25th May – Print to Video.

Submit Assignment One (Mini DV Version) for all courses.

1st June – DVD Studio Pro DVD burning session.

Submit Assignment One (DVD Version) for Editing.
