Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to apply design studio processes when interpreting and responding to a specified brief through the production of a fashion design product.

Learning Outcomes


The unit is a holistic unit that requires the integration of skills across the design process and focuses on the use and experimentation of design studio processes to result in the production of a fashion design product which meets specified briefs. Learning outcomes include interpretation of design briefs, how to research and interpret design trends, target markets, and development of design concepts through all facets of the process including pattern, garment production and final presentation of work meeting the original brief/s criteria.


Details of Learning Activities

The course is integrated with LMTFD5015B Develop patterns for complex fashion garments to form a a cluster or learning program called Design Studio 1
In this course you will be involved in theoretical and practical tasks.
• You will be required to undertake research outside of regular class times.
• You will integrate skills across the design process and focus on the use and experimentation of design studio processes which will result in the production of a fashion design product which meets a specified brief.


Teaching Schedule

WEEK 1 - 5
• Introduction to course requirements, attendance, assessment etc.
• Generic Jacket and sampler construction for Project 1.
• Self-directed design research for Project 2.
Time management strategies.
1/2 scale pattern development plan
Submit Project 1 (generic jacket and samplers) to demonstrate required skill and competency before commencement of Project 2
Submit Research and Design Development (Project 2) for assessment.


WEEK 1 - 5 
8 hours out of class time to be spent on design & pattern making research for project 2

WEEKS 6 - 15
o Commence patternmaking and toiling for Project 2.
o Cut final production patterns in card.
o Cut the final garments ready for production.
o Tailored garments construction
o Finalise garments and related project work for assessment as per original Design Brief Criteria.

WEEKS 6 - 15

o Commence patternmaking and toiling for Project 2.

o Cut final production patterns in card.

Submit patterns on paper with specification sheet & final toiles for pre-assessment by means of class appointment: Week 10
Submit Final Patterns on Card : Week 13

10 hours out of class time to be spent on design development for project 2

Industry Partner Briefing and Reviews in weeks 10-14 for Design Studio 2

WEEK 16
•Submit and present final Tailored garments and project work for Project 2

Overview of Assessment

Detailed course and assessment requirements and information will be made available to you first week of class. Specific details will be explained to you during scheduled classes.

This course comprises both practical and theory components. You will be expected to attend and participate in class activities.

As well as class activities you will be required to undertake research and assessment practice outside of regular class times and participate in formal assessment tasks.
