Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to grade flat or 2D patterns used for garment production.

National Element Code & Title:	LMTFD4013B Grade 2D patterns
Element:	1. Analyse grading system
Performance Criteria:	1.1 Workstation and/or equipment are selected and prepared according to OHS practices . 1.2 Grading system used in workplace is identified. 1.3 Measurements of base size and subsequent spread are identified. 1.4 Number of sizes in grading is calculated 1.5 Grade increments between sizes are established.
Element:	2. Set up base pattern
Performance Criteria:	2.1 Base pattern of a basic style and pattern pieces are identified, constant or ’0’ position is established and grade points with corresponding values are assigned. 2.2 Base size pattern is checked for correct information, balance points and pattern fit and clarification sought, as required. 2.3 Style and fabric characteristics which influence grading are identified and any queries are clarified with patternmaker. 2.4 Appropriate grade plan is selected and grade rule table constructed.

Performance Criteria:	3.1 Stacking or outlay requirements, including direction are determined. 3.2 Pattern is graded manually using patternmaking technical skills or by computer. 3.3 If stacking, stack points or lines are identified. 3.4 Integrity of pattern attributes is preserved during grading. 3.5 All pattern pieces are accurately labelled with pattern marking symbols . 3.6 Pattern is checked for accuracy and rectified or addressed as required.

Performance Criteria:	4.1 Records are maintained and documentation completed as required. 4.2 Patterns are filed.

Learning Outcomes

In this unit you will develop the skills and knowledge required to grade a range flat or 2D patterns used for garment production. Learning outcomes will include different grading methods, grading rules and relevant methods of recording information, as used in the clothing and fashion industry.

Details of Learning Activities

1. Set up the work area and equipment for grading according to Occupational Health and Safety by following correct procedures.
2. Correctly inspect the base pattern and graded pattern pieces during the grading process by checking that the pattern pieces and pattern information are present and by taking corrective action to maintain accuracy.
3. Identify garment features or fabric characteristics that may effect the grading process by checking fabric samples, sample garments, the base pattern or specifications.
4. Establish grade plans according to given styles by following information from specifications or size charts.
5. Accurately grade a range of patterns/styles using the techniques and principles of accurate grading patternmaking and good fit.
6. Make correct use of grading equipment by using reliable manual methods of grading.
7. Maintain records by using appropriate filing systems to update and store graded patterns and grading information

Overview of Assessment

Detailed course and assessment requirements and information will be made available to you first week of class. Specific details will be explained to you during scheduled classes.

This course comprises both practical and theory components. You will be expected to attend and participate in class activities.


As well as class activities you will be required to undertake research and assessment practice outside of regular class times and participate in formal assessment tasks.
