Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to create a pattern from a block to meet design and fit specifications of the customer

Element:

1. Prepare workstation

Performance Criteria:

1.1Workstation and seating are set up according to OHS
practices and specifications for work.
1.2 Pattern-making tools and equipment are selected and
prepared.
1.3 Any additional materials and equipment required to
perform task are collected.
1.4 Pattern-making tools, equipment and supplies are laid out
according to OHS practices for efficient and safe
operation.

2. Interpret the design

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Design drawings and specifications are interpreted and
clarified.
2.2 Design lines and style features are identified.
2.3 Fabric characteristics and performance, and trims and
finishings are considered in relation to the design and
customer requirements.
2.4 Ease allowance is determined.
2.5 Any special construction methods or trim details of
garment are considered in relation to the design.

3. Select block

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Client is measured.
3.2 Pattern production is planned according to quality
standards and workplace procedures.
3.3 Appropriate block is selected and size adjustments made.

4. Create pattern

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Design lines are proportioned on dress form.
4.2 Pattern-making principles are applied in developing
pattern.
4.3 Methods and formulas used are documented.
4.4 Pattern is produced from existing block to customer
design and fit.
4.5 Pattern pieces are checked for accuracy of seam
allowances, seam match, hems and functional openings.
4.6 Pattern pieces are labelled and markings completed.

5. Test and finalise pattern

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Toile or garment segments are tested for proportioning
and fit.
5.2 Fitting is performed to ensure that prototype meets with
customer satisfaction.
5.3 Any pattern alterations are completed and assessed to
meet fit and design requirements.
5.4 Pattern is finalised and checked to ensure accuracy,
completeness and compliance to design specifications.
5.5 Final patterns are directed to next production process.

Performance Criteria:

6.1 Pattern specification sheet is completed and attached to
patterns for storage.
6.2 Finished patterns are filed.


Learning Outcomes


On sucessful completion of  this course you will develop the required skills and knowledge as it applies to the development of a pattern from an existing block for an individual size and to meet the styling requirements of the customer; as well as developing the of skills associated with communication, problem solving and planning and organising to interpret design specifications, select procedures and tools and create a pattern. Communication and numeracy skills are used to interpret designs and develop and document pattern specifications. Self management skills are used to test the pattern and ensure conformance to quality standards.


Details of Learning Activities

The course is integrated with LMTFD4001B Apply Design Studio Process to form a a cluster or learning program called Design Studio 1
In this course you will be involved in theoretical and practical tasks.
• You will be required to undertake research outside of regular class times.
• You will integrate skills across the design process and focus on the use and experimentation of design studio processes which will result in the production of a fashion design product which meets a specified brief.


Teaching Schedule


 WEEK 1 - 5: 2 July - 30 July
Introduction to course requirements, attendance, assessment etc.
Generic Jacket and sampler construction for Project 1.
Self-directed design research for Project 2
Time management strategies.
8 hours out of class time to be spent on design & pattern making research for project 2 
 
WEEK 5: 30 July
Submit Project 1 (generic jacket and sampler) to demonstrate required skill and competency before commencement of Project 2
ASSESSMENT 1
Submit Research and Design Development (Project 2) for assessment

WEEKS 6 - 10: 6 August - 3 September
Commence patternmaking and toiling for Project 2.
Finalise production patterns on Paper.
Cut the final garments ready for production.
Tailored garments construction
Finalise garments and related project work for assessment as per original Design Brief Criteria.
10 hours out of class time to be spent on design development for project 2

WEEK 10: 3 September
ASSESMENT 2 Submit patterns on paper with specification sheet and final toiles for assesment

WEEKS 11- 15: 10 September -22 October
Work on final development of Tailored outfit.

WEEK 16: 29 October
ASSESMENT 3 & 4
Submit and present final Tailored garments with specifications and Story Boards for Project 2

Overview of Assessment

Detailed course and assessment requirements and information will be made available to you first week of class. Specific details will be explained to you during scheduled classes.

This course comprises both practical and theory components. You will be expected to attend and participate in class activities.


As well as class activities you will be required to undertake research and assessment practice outside of regular class times and participate in formal assessment tasks.
