Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to produce fashion illustrations to visually communicate the fashion figure in a variety of poses and silhouettes.

1. Prepare work area

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Workbench and seating are set up according to OHS practices .
1.2 Drawing tools and equipment are selected and prepared.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Reference source appropriate to illustration requirements is selected.
2.2 Reference source is collaged to assist in illustration process.
2.3 Compositional balance, scale and perspective are analysed.
2.4 Figure details are analysed.

3. Select appropriate techniques for fashion illustration

Performance Criteria:

3.1 A variety of illustrationtechniques are identified for use in presenting fashion illustration.
3.2 Appropriate media are selected.
3.3 Techniques to be used are selected.
3.4 Illustration techniques and media selected are analysed for appropriateness in communicating a variety of fabrics and textures.

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Proportion, scale and stylisation relevant to fashion illustration are selected.
4.2 Clean, confident and stylised lines are used in presenting representation of fashion figure.
4.3 A variety of silhouettes and poses are illustrated.
4.4 Illustration of clothed fashion figure is produced.

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Illustration is inspected against quality standards.
5.2 Any changes or adjustments to sketch are carried out as required.
5.3 Documentation relating to fashion illustration is completed and stored.


Learning Outcomes


On sucessful completion of this course requires the learner to develop the skill and knowledge required to produce fashion illustrations to visually communicate the fashion figure in a variety of poses and silhouettes using stylised drawing and rendering techniques.
Learning also requires the development of skills in planning and organising, problem solving and communication to interpret specifications and produce illustrations. Self management skills are required to ensure illustrations meet quality standards.


Details of Learning Activities

In this course students skills required to develop staryboards appropriate for presentation of fashion Ranges.

Appropriate illstrations will be developed to meet the meeds of the market the range is being produced for .

Various media for illustration and illustration methods will be explored.

This course is linked to Design Studio 2 in that illustrations for that course may be produced in  this Fashion illustration course.

Week 1 -Introduction

Week 2 - wk 5 Drawing Fashion Figure featuring student fashion garment development

Week 6- wk 9 Mixed media trials demonstrating various fabrics appearances

Week 10- Assessment 1 due. Folio 

Week 11 - wk 14 Assignment as per Design Studio 2

Week 15 - Layout and presentation of 3 best Fashion Illustrations (1x featuring Design Studio 2 )

Week 16- Assessment 2 due, class presentation

Overview of Assessment

Detailed course and assessment requirements and information will be made available to you first week of class. Specific details will be explained to you during scheduled classes.

This course comprises both practical and theory components. You will be expected to attend and participate in class activities.

As well as class activities you will be required to undertake research and assessment practice outside of regular class times and participate in formal assessment tasks.

Assessment 2 - Present 3 of the best fashion illustrations. One of the illustrations must be an illustration as per Design Studio 2 Design brief
