Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to develop patterns for use in the production of complex fashion garments with advanced styling requirements.

1. Prepare pattern workstation

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Workstation and seating are set up according to OHS
practices and specifications for work.
1.2 Pattern-making tools and equipment are selected and

2. Analyse garment range

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Garments in range are confirmed.

3. Analyse fabrics for garment range

6. Prepare sample pattern

6.1 Toile or prototype is constructed as appropriate in stages
or as a complete garment.
6.2 Toile or prototype is examined and assessed in
consultation with designer.
6.3 Pattern problems or faults are identified.
6.4 Pattern is altered or adjusted as required to meet design
6.5 Pattern is finalised and checked to ensure accuracy,
completeness and compliance to design requirements.


7. Develop pattern portfolio

Learning Outcomes

On sucessful completion of this course the student will have developed the required skills and knowledge in planning and organisingrequired to to develop patterns. Problem solving skills are required to determine and apply suitable patternmaking principles to achieve design requirements and identify any pattern problems. Communication and numeracy skills are used to interpret designs and develop and document pattern specifications. Self management skills are used to ensure safe use of technology and conformance of work to quality standards.

Details of Learning Activities

The unit applies to the development of patterns for complex fashion garments with advanced styling requirements using an existing block and applying principles of patternmaking.
Work will involve individual and team-related activities in a classroom environment.
Skills associated within the course involve self management skills, planning, organising and problem solving techniques, and suitable patternmaking principles to achieve design requirements and identify any pattern problems.

This course comprises both practical and theory components. You will be expected to attend and participate in class activities.

As well as class activities you will be required to undertake research and assessment practice outside of regular class times and participate in formal assessment tasks.

sheets; methods and formulas.
All work must be completed, to ensure range of skills have been aquired, (including the Assessment task 2 and 3) to a required standard for student to be deemed competent in this course, and receive a PASS grade.

Graded Assessment –
Assessment Task 2 - 50% weight of graded assessment 
Assessment Task 3 – 50% weight of graded assessment

Work that is above the minimum quality requirements to be deemed competent in this course will
be graded accordingly. Based on the assessment rubric of each assessment task, the final
graded result (Competent Credit to  Competent High Distinction) will reflect the standard of work submitted.
