Learning Outcomes
In this unit you will develop the skills and knowledge as it applies to fabrics used to produce garments and accessories and includes skills and knowledge required to guide the use and handling of fabrics. It includes sourcing information from reference material and industry specialists as well as conducting simple tests to identify fabric types and properties. Activities will include identification methods and tests currently used in fashion related workplace in relation to fabric testing and performance.
Details of Learning Activities
Blended learning consisting of classroom activities and practical workshops.
Teaching Schedule
Week 1 Introduction to unit. Assessment Requirements. Methods of identifying different fibres Burning and Microscopic
Week 2 Inspect a range of fabrics and yarns for structure and fibre content.
Week 3 Fabric testing requirements. Look at Australian standards. View Textile testing DVD.
Week 4 Fabric testing assignment. Discuss the use of blue and grey scales. Demonstration of equipment to be used for testing. Select Knitted and Woven Fabrics for testing.
Week 5 Prepare samples according to standards for testing. Commence testing. Continue testing fabrics and record results.
Week 6 Continue fabric testing and collate results.
Week 7 Look at seam slippage and needle damage. Complete fabric testing and hand in Report
Week 8 Testing of denim fabric samples. (Holistic project)
Week 9 Labelling requirements according to Australian standards.
Week 10 Care labelling requirements according to the standards. Hand out labelling assignment. 3 Hours non contact
Week 11 Children’s wear labelling requirements. Hand in Labelling assignment.
Week 12 Class activity group discussion and presentation of specification for a yarn and fabric for a selected end product. Handout Research on different finishing processes. 3 Hours non contact
Mid Semester Break
Week 13 Presentation of different finishing processes. Processes questionnaire
Week 14 Visit to Dye house Pro Fashion Surface decoration of Denim and Knitting Mill.
Week 15 View Textile Colouration video of different dye types and methods and complete questionnaire class activity.
Week 16 Surface decoration of fabrics. Dye a range a fabrics with different dyes.

Task 1 Fabric Performance Testing graded:- Students will be required to conduct standard tests on two given fabrics and report on the results.
Task 2 Care and Content labelling assignment graded:- Demonstrate the ability to select a range of labels in accordance with Australian Standards.
Task 3 Fibre and Fabric Finishes ungraded:- Research a given finishing process and present findings to class.
Task 4 Fabric specification ungraded:- Complete a specification for a given yarn and fabric. Oral presentation in class.
