Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to create patterns using an existing block, and applying advanced patternmaking principles.

1. Prepare workstation

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Workstation and seating are set up according to OHS
practices and specifications for work.
1.2 Pattern-making tools and equipment are selected and
prepared.
1.3 Any additional materials and equipment required to
perform task are collected.
1.4 Pattern-making tools, equipment and supplies are laid out
for efficient and safe operation.

2.1 Design drawings and specifications are interpreted and
clarified.

2.5 Ease allowance is determined.

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Advanced patternmaking principles are applied in
developing pattern.
4.2 Methods and formulas used are documented.
4.3 Pattern is produced from existing block to specified
design.
4.4 Pattern pieces are checked for accuracy of seam
allowances, ease allowance, seam match, hems and
functional openings.
4.5 Pattern pieces are labelled and markings completed.

5. Test and finalise pattern

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Toile or garment segments are tested as appropriate.
5.2 Toile or garment segments are examined and assessed
against design specifications.
5.3 Any pattern alterations are completed and assessed to
meet specifications.
5.4 Pattern is finalised and checked to ensure accuracy,
completeness and compliance to design specifications.

6. Prepare pattern documentation for production

Performance Criteria:

6.1 Sizing system for pattern and base size are identified.
6.2 Spreadsheet of full range for selected sizing system is
prepared with essential measurements.
6.3 Grade table for full size range is prepared.
6.4 Pattern specification sheets with trade drawings are
completed and attached to patterns for storage.
6.5 Work order for sizing labels is prepared as required.
6.6 Finished patterns are filed.


Learning Outcomes


In this unit you will develop the skills and knowledge required in the development of a range of patterns from an existing block/s, using advanced patternmaking principles, including contouring, square blocking and pivoting.


Details of Learning Activities

The course is integrated with MANU5930C Construct stock size block for garment to meet size and fit specifications to form a cluster called Pattern & Block Design.
Activities will include construction of blocks and toiles to:
• interpret size
• measure fit model
• construct and check blocks
• develop and adjust toiles
• communicate effectively with design team, customers, etc.
• apply OH&S practices in work operations
• maintain accurate records

Overview of Assessment

Detailed course and assessment requirements and information will be made available to you first week of class. Specific details will be explained to you during scheduled classes.

This course comprises both practical and theory components. You will be expected to attend and participate in class activities.


As well as class activities you will be required to undertake research and assessment practice outside of regular class times and participate in formal assessment tasks.


PLEASE NOTE: work that has not been authenticated during class as your own work will not be considered for assessment.


Assessment Tasks

Un-graded Assessment 

Pattern record Folio containing documentation of; all Progressive class work; Specification sheets; methods and formulas.
All work must be completed to ensure the range of skills required have been developed (including the Jacket assignment and Independent Learning task) to the required standard for student to be deemed competent in this course, and receive a PASS (CAG - Competency achieved Grade) grade.


Graded Assessments –

Jacket assignment - 60% weight of graded assessment
Independent Learning Task – 40% weight of graded assessment

Work that is above the minimum quality requirements to be deemed competent in this course will be graded accordingly. Based on the assessment rubric of each assessment task, the final graded result (competent with Credit to High Distinction) will reflect the standard of work submitted.

Assessment will involve research outside of Class time.
Out of class work facilitates learning in a self paced manner and forms part of the overall
achievement of the competencies in the course.
Graded Assessment
A pass in each assessment will result in a grade for the student. Where a pass is achieved
competency for that assessment is given. Where there are multiple assessments for a single
competency the students must achieve competency (a pass) in each assessment to be deemed
competent. Competency MUST be achieved in all assessments of the course for a graded result
to be obtained.
