This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to execute tasks associated with the recruitment cycle.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment may incorporate a variety of methods including technical requirements documentation, homework, assignments, group and/or individual projects, in class exercises, written and practical assessments, problem solving exercises, presentations, direct observation of actual and simulated work practice, presentation of portfolio of evidence which may comprise documents, and/or photographs and/or video and audio files, review of products produced through work based or course activities.

Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.  Students will be provided with feedback throughout the course to check their progress.


Assessment Tasks

Working in small groups, students will participate in role plays that will span the recruitment, selection and induction cycle.

The group will develop a position description for a simulated position and an advertisement to recruit people to this position. They will then prepare documentation for the interviews and make the necessary preparations for interviews.

After shortlisting the applicants, group members will form a panel to interview the applicants.

Following the interviews, when selection decisions have been made, the panel will report to management on the selection decisions and follow the necessary organisational processes.

Finally, an induction/orientation program for the new employee will be developed. The induction/orientation program will then be presented by the group to the class.

Assessment 1a: Review of documentation - Position Description due COB Week 6
You will develop a position description for a new employee to join the Valley View Publishing Organisation. (Details of this organisation can be found in the Admin Toolbox).
 

Assessment 1b: Review of documentation - Advertisement for the position due COB Week 6
You are to develop a suitable advertisement that can be advertised in Saturday’s Age Careers supplement and can also be adapted for online use at Seek.com. You will need to investigate the required format for each purpose and the costs associated with advertising the position.
 

Assessment 2a: Review of documentation - Interview questions/ranking sheet due COB Week 7
You are to prepare ten interview questions, (at least eight of which will be behavioural questions). In addition, you should develop a suitable ranking sheet for use during the interviews.
 

Assessment 2b: Observation of interviewing techniques - Interview due COB Week 7
Your advertisement will be placed on the Learning Hub to enable other students (who are not in your group) to apply for the position. You will then work with other members of your group to form a panel. The panel will then shortlist, prepare for and interview applicants for the position. This will enable you to develop skills in both interviewer and interviewee techniques. You are expected to apply for one of the positions advertised by a group other than your own.
 

Assessment 3: Analysis of response to scenario - report to management due COB Week 12
You will prepare a written report to management on the panel’s selection decision.
 

Assessment 4: Analysis of response to scenario - Induction/orientation program - Presentation due in class Week 14
You will prepare and present the induction/orientation program you have developed for the new employee, to the class in a 10 minute presentation.
 

Assessment 5: Peer assessment due Week 15

• All written assessments should be submitted to the assignment drop box in myRMIT by 17:00 on the due date.

Marking Guide (competency):

Vocational Education and Training (VET) is based on current industry needs and the focus on preparing you for the workplace. Because VET courses are informed by practical application of knowledge and skills, they are based on a system known as ‘competency based training’ (CBT). So when you are assessed in VET it is about whether you are competent to do the job, as well as having a firm grasp on the knowledge and skills required to do that job, as opposed to traditional curriculum based education settings that are often based on knowledge retention.

You need to demonstrate you are competent in each element of the unit of competency you are studying.

You will receive feedback on each assessment task that will inform you whether you are competent or not and how well you are performing. Once competent in all elements of the unit you receive a competency grading.

Marking Guide (Grading)

:After achieving competency we then grade your performance in the unit; this gives you the opportunity to have the level of your performance formally recognized against industry standards and employability skills.


The grading is according to the following criteria:

We are looking for a high level of ability to complete all tasks independently as per the specifications as well as demonstrating a high level of initiative in your approach to recruiting, selecting and inducting staff
2. DEMONSTRATED BREADTH OF UNDERPINNING KNOWLEDGE AND A WILLINGNESS TO CONTINUE LEARNING

We are looking for depth of understanding of the key concepts and knowledge required in managing a recruitment system. You should be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of all applicable human resource legislative requirements in all the assessment tasks.

3. TECHNIQUES & PROCESSES, TECHNOLOGY SKILLS AND PROBLEM SOLVING

We are looking for appropriate use of technology to assist in presenting all tasks clearly and suitable for the intended audience. You also need to show an understanding of the kinds of problems that can arise in managing a recruitment system and how these might be addressed.

4. WORK ORGANISATION, PLANNING AND SELF MANAGEMENT

We expect to see on-going uploading of information into Pebble Pad that is relevant to the unit, full utilisation of Pebble Pad and Blackboard as per course requirements and timely submission of all required assessment tasks.


5. COMMUNICATION, PEOPLE NETWORKING, LANGUAGE AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS AND TEAMWORK
