Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to interpret a brief for the vision system requirements of a production or space and to design a plan for the installation of vision systems. The development of a vision system plan requires considerable knowledge of the operational aspects of all types of vision systems and would normally be undertaken by senior technicians or technical directors.

Performance Criteria:


1.1 Interpret and confirm the vision system requirements for the production/event through discussions with relevant personnel
1.2 Identify the type of production and the available budget for the vision system component
1.3 Identify deadlines for the development of the plan and the installation according to client requirements

2.1 Undertake research into the style of production/event and generate and assess a range of ideas for the delivery of vision system services
2.2 Research the venue facilities and constraints to determine optimum positioning of vision systems to achieve the desired outcome
2.3 Determine the range and numbers of vision systems needed to meet the technical and creative requests
2.4 Determine the human and financial resources required to set up and operate the vision systems

3.1 Produce the vision system plan to reflect the brief
3.2 Take into consideration all research findings, any identified constraints, and any suggested improvements to the original brief
3.3 Draw the vision system plan to scale and title block, key or legend, and industry standard symbols
3.4 Identify all relevant information on the plan, including location and types of vision systems, accessories and supports or mounts and power sources
3.5 Include an accurate list of all equipment and technician requirements for the production/event

4.1 Present the plan to relevant personnel and explain technical requirements
4.2 Participate in the ongoing evaluation of the presented plan
4.3 Negotiate and agree to additional requirements or modifications and undertake any necessary amendments to the audiovisual plan
4.4 Make the final plan available to relevant personnel to ensure smooth installation and operation of vision systems

Assessment Tasks

Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative.
Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered an essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this unit are graded.

To demonstrate competency in this course, you will need to complete each one of the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard.

Formative Assessment
1. The development of a vision system plan and presentation to class (Group work). This assessment is expected to demonstrate your team’s effective interpretation of a vision brief with workable plans to meet the brief. Use of effective communication with peers and other technical personnel is critical. It is due to be completed in Weeks 9 – 13, Semester 1
2. ‘Design a Vision System’ open book test. This assessment is expected to demonstrate your effective interpretation of a vision brief with workable plans to meet the brief in a limited time frame. It is due to be completed in Week 8, Semester 1.
3. Theory test. This is an examination of your technical knowledge and you are expected to answer a range of multiple-choice, short and long answer questions related to the competency unit, class notes/discussions and the course material on blackboard. It is due to be completed in Week 15, Semester 1.

Summative Assessment
1. Vision Systems Installations Plan Semester 1. The production of vision systems installations plan for a particular production and presentation to your teacher (Individual work), due in TAFE Week 16, Semester 1.
2. Vision Systems Installations Plan Semester 2. The production of vision systems installations plan for: Open Day, MAVIS, Splendor or your own event. TAFE Week 14, Semester 2.
