Course Description

The aim of this course is to enable you to plan, schedule and location manage a television program. It develops the skills and knowledge required to coordinate all aspects of the project in pre-production, on-site at the time of production and post and to effectively communicate with the production team.
This course is run in parallel with Compile Production Schedules VART5973C

1 Prepare locations for shoots. 

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Ensure required resources are available prior to commencement of shoots and equipment is in full working order.
1.2 Arrange and coordinate safe transport of equipment to locations and provide clear directions for production staff to reach locations.
1.3 Oversee installation and testing of equipment at locations, using safe OHS practices.
1.4 Adapt site to meet creative and technical requirements of productions and prepare contingency plans to resolve potential problems.
1.5 Brief and update production staff, location owners and authorities on changes to production plans, schedules or facilities.
1.6 Plan and implement OHS requirements for all activities and personnel at locations.
1.7 Arrange cast and crew facilities as required and provide clear travel directions to each location.

2 Manage location activities. 

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Ensure all activities comply with production safety plan and organisational policies and procedures, and identify and minimise potential hazards.
2.2 Take appropriate action to minimise disruptions from the public to productions and make alternative arrangements to manage normal traffic and pedestrian movement.
2.3 Arrange safe storage of all equipment and other facilities while on location.
2.4 Resolve creative and technical issues where possible to minimise negative impact on productions.
2.5 Ensure that accidents and incidents are attended to swiftly and decisively, and that emergency services are contactable at all times.
2.6 Take appropriate action if conditions of access to location are breached.
2.7 Supervise activities of location management team as applicable.

3 Finalise location operations. 

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Ensure locations are returned to their original or an improved state.
3.2 Organise removal and labelling of materials and equipment from locations, in compliance with OHS regulations.
3.3 Complete production documentation and reports and finalise outstanding contractual arrangements.
3.4 Report any faults and concerns to relevant production staff.
3.5 If appropriate, confirm creative and technical requirements for the next set-up and advise relevant production staff accordingly.
3.6 Evaluate all aspects of completed projects and note areas for improvement.

Overview of Assessment

Complete pre-production documentation and planning as part of a team, present material relevant to your department at production meetings and manage your department for the production on location.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered as essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this unit are graded.

To demonstrate competency in this course, you will need to complete each one of the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assessments and a grade for the summative assessment.

You will be assessed using the following methods:

Formative Assessment

1. Produce pre-production documentation in relation to locations. Due week 5.
2. Present material as Department head at a production meeting .Due week 5.

Summative Assessment
3. Act in the role of Department head for a series of short films for ‘EFP’, ‘MAVIS’ and/or ‘Splendour’. Due on production dates TBA leading up to September 30, 2012. Due week 9
