Course Description

This course develops the knowledge and skills required to represent and communicate a concept through the use of advanced drawing techniques.

2. Draw the concept using a range of advanced techniques and selected media and tools
3. Evaluate suitability of each technique in terms of its success in communicating the concept within  the presentation

Performance Criteria:

1. Identify sources of information appropriate to a range of techniques and materials and the application to the communication of a concept
2. Systematically gather, organise and synthesise the information
3. Evaluate information in terms of the application of techniques and materials to the concept
4. Research and evaluate a range of possible techniques taking into account communication of  the concept and the presentation context

  • Occupational health and safety procedures
  • Physical properties and capabilities of the most commonly used materials
  • Techniques, materials and tools and the way they can be adapted and extended in the production of drawings
  • Approaches to drawing and the work of key practitioners.


Details of Learning Activities

Students are presented with a series of weekly still life set ups where the drawings address both the objects presented, the materials used, and the techniques applied.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment may incorporate a range of methods to assess performance and the application of essential underpinning knowledge, and might include:

  • Production of a drawing portfolio
  • Observation over a sufficient time period demonstrating the application of this course
  • Written and/or oral questioning to assess knowledge and understanding.
  • Completion of an arts journal including personal reflection and feedback from relevant others
  • A portfolio of evidence.

You will be required to demonstrate the following:
  • produce drawings which demonstrate a command of selected advanced drawing techniques which successfully represent and communicate the concept
  • research and evaluate advanced drawing techniques
  • the ability to critically analyse own work
  • reflect consistent interaction with teachers in the studio in order to be considered for assessment.
