To gain entry into CHC51408 Diploma of Youth Work candidates must:

1. Be recognised, as competent through a recognised training package or recognition process, against the following compulsory units of CHC41808 Certificate IV in Youth Work:

• CHCCS404A Work within a relevant legal and ethical framework
• CHCCS422A Respond holistically to client issues and refer appropriately
• CHCYTH401A Engage respectfully with young people
• CHCYTH402A Work effectively with young people within the youth work context

• HLTOHS300A Contribute to OHS processes

2. Have suitable relevant youth sector experience and knowledge to indicate likely success at this level of qualification in a job role involving:

Course Description

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required to develop an agency approach to young people in crisis.

Performance Criteria:

1 Complete all required reporting and ensure it is comprehensive, accurate and consistent with organisation’s policies and procedures
2 Define debriefing procedures and implement routinely
3 Provide opportunity for participation in review and evaluation of organisation responsiveness
4 Identify needs of all specific parties which arise from a crisis situation and develop strategies to ensure they are addressed
 

Element:

Implement a framework for preventing crisis situations.

Performance Criteria:

1 Develop framework to address prevention and response to critical situations and which reflects consideration of beliefs, rights and needs of client and responsibilities of organisation within a legislative and statutory context
2 Establish appropriate resources and mechanisms to assist workers to deal with crisis situations
3 Define details of organisation’s responsiveness to crisis situations and articulate to relevant personnel
4 Store and maintain all information related to crisis situations to maximise accessibility, accuracy, currency and legibility
5 Implement procedures to ensure clients have ready access to information that may help to resolve crisis situations

Performance Criteria:

1 Establish appropriate protocols for managing potential and actual crisis situations
2 Draft, regularly update procedures for the management of crises and communicate to staff and other relevant personnel
3 Ensure crisis management procedures which are developed are consistent with legal and organisation obligations and constraints
4 Allocate resources for prompt and effective response to crisis situations
5 Provide appropriate crisis response training and update briefings to workers on a regular basis
6 Formulate appropriate advice for upgrade of organisation procedures including those related to work health and safety (WHS) and other industrial and legislative requirements

Details of Learning Activities

Classes are scheduled on the last Friday of every month throughout the year. Students will be given readings in preparation for each workshop. Led by industry leaders, these workshops take students through a variety of in-class tasks and scenarios with the intention of extending their current working knowledge of Youth Work practice. The work undertaken in class is invaluable for the assessment tasks.
It is expected that time spent out of the classroom will be dedicated to completing the various assessment tasks listed below.
Students will be expected to make use of the Learning Hub as part of their on-line studies which are part of the course.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment in this unit enables participants to gain skills and knowledge that are directly applicable to their workplace while being encouraged to share current work practices. Assessment tasks involve team and individual projects and written assessment including questions and case studies. Based on your individual learning plan, you will be offered a number of learning strategies including workshop attendance, project work development and workplace support to your assessment needs for this program.


Assessment Tasks

For this course your assessment tasks will be:

• UNDERPINNING KNOWLEDGE QUESTION -To research a range of materials and address the set questions by discussing with peers and documenting conclusions drawn. Discussion and reflection to be focused on how Youth Work concepts and principles covered in the readings and workshops apply in the context of developing and supporting a community of practice. Due April 18
• PROJECT USING A PROJECT PRO-FORMA (Project Brief) -To research, implement and report on procedures and practices that will enable the establishment of a project. It involves working with colleagues in groups and teams focusing on the development of a project as a means of building capacity within a defined workplace environment. due April 18
• RESEARCH PAPER -As part of this assessment task you will be required to read the policy framework “Positive pathways for Victoria’s vulnerable young people” (located on USB) and reflect on the implications of this framework on your current work practice Due September 26
• FINAL PROJECT REPORT To report and/or present on the research, implementation, procedures and practices of the project undertaken
• EVIDENCE PORTFOLIO A compilation of evidence examples of the students’ roles and responsibilities within the youth work program and of work undertaken within their own community/organization. Final due date: Nov
