Course Description

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required by the worker to represent the interests of service users, the community and/or the community services and health industries.
Representation will include the development of community representative and industry participative roles and positions in influencing policy processes and decision-making forums.

Details of Learning Activities

You will be involved in learning activities in a day long workshop which will include group discussions and group work activities based on workshop content. You will also be required to undertake independent studies. Reflection on your own work context is a significant aspect of this course and you will be given opportunities to discuss and think about your own practice.

Where the teacher has used a powerpoint presentation during the workshop, these resources and other learning activities and handouts will be made available to enroled students post the workshop via electronic methods.
 


Overview of Assessment

This course requires you to demonstrate your knowledge and application of skills in relation to advocating for person centred solutions to meet identified needs both at service delivery and policy level and the representation of individual and group concerns and issues at  organisational, community and industry levels. Developing community group members capacity and independance is a priority.


Assessment Tasks

For this unit you will be required to complete three assessment tasks:

 Task 1 - Participate in a class based case study on the advocacy and representation process in a community development workplace and in small groups provide oral and written responses to key questions.

Task 2 -  Drawing on your  workplace/ voluntary work, select a client who you have been involved with in an advocacy or representative role and respond to the "Advocacy fact sheet” (document provided in workshop).

 Task 3 –  Identify a common social issue impacting on the community group you are working with and respond to written questions about the peak body that works to bring about social and policy change to improve the situation for community members affected by the issue.
