Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to explore and creatively apply the design process to the development of 2 dimensional (2D) forms.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.

National Codes, Titles, Elements and Performance Criteria

National Element Code & Title:

BSBDES302A Explore and apply the creative design process to 2D forms

Element:

1.  Source information on 2-dimensional design

Performance Criteria:

1.1. Identify and access relevant sources of information on 2-dimensional design
1.2. Evaluate and collate information to build a knowledge of 2-dimensional design

Element:

2.  Explore the creative design process for 2-dimensional forms

Performance Criteria:

2.1. Use creative thinking techniques to generate a range of ideas and options
2.2. Use experimentation to explore and challenge a range of different ideas
2.3. Challenge assumptions, reflect on ideas and refine approaches
2.4. Consciously change perspective, and evaluate ideas and situations in new ways

Element:

3.  Communicate concepts or ideas through application of design process to 2-dimensional forms

Performance Criteria:

3.1. Investigate and reflect on how a particular concept or idea might be communicated in a 2-dimensional form
3.2. Select materials, tools and equipment relevant to the realisation of the concept or idea
3.3. Apply a creative design process to produce a range of 2-dimensional concept realisations
3.4. Reflect on own application of design process and success in communicating the concept or idea
3.5. Seek and obtain feedback from others about the 2-dimensional form and its success in communicating the concept or idea
3.6. Present and store concept realisations or samples in a format which takes account of the need for professional presentation and potential value for future work

Learning Outcomes

This unit applies to individuals who apply the creative design process to the development of 2-dimensional forms. The unit underpins many other specialised design units.

Overview of Assessment

Evidence of the following is essential:
• production of a range of samples or concept realisations which show the creative application of processes to 2-dimensional forms
• knowledge of the design process as it applies to 2-dimensional work.

Assessment Tasks

Participants will undertake 4 Assessment Tasks in order to complete this unit
All projects must be submitted & passed as competent in order to complete this course.
Students can appy for an extension of time for medical reasons only. A medical certificate must be provided

There are four projects:

ASSESSMENT 1 Elements & Principles - Design Statement

ASSESSMENT 2 A2 Presentation Board

ASSESSMENT 3 Rug Design

ASSESSMENT 4 Visual Diary

Detailed briefs will be provided at the commence of the course. Please refer to the following link in Blackboard:

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit Evidence of the following is essential:

• production of a range of samples or concept realisations which show the creative application of processes to 2-dimensional forms
• knowledge of the design process as it applies to 2-dimensional work.

Context of and specific resources for assessment Assessment must ensure:

• access to the materials resources and equipment needed to apply design processes to 2-dimensional forms.

Method of assessment:

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

• direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate
• evaluation of samples or concept realisations produced by the candidate and interrogation of the creative process used
• oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of 2-dimensional design.

Guidance information for assessment :

The design process does not occur in isolation. Holistic assessment with other units relevant to the industry sector, workplace and job role is recommended.

Other Information

This course is run as an intensive over 7 weeks with 2 sessions per week. Part Time students will undertake a 10 week intensive with 1 session per week.

This gives students the opportity to emerse themselves in the course content and experience the pace of a professional industry environment through a simulated "design studio"

Exploration and discovery undertaken within the orientation week will be developed through this course. It is essential that students attend orientation week

This course has two types of assessment. One is numerical and one is competency . Assessment tasks are provided as an opportunity for you to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge in order to be deemend competent in this unit.

Graded assessment will be offered once competency has been achieved. Your teacher will provide further information on grading at the commencement of this course.

Should a student happen to miss a class, it is the students responsibility to catch up on missed course content. Students can refer to Blackboard for course content.
