This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to explore and creatively apply the design process to the development of 2 dimensional (2D) forms.

Learning Outcomes

This unit applies to individuals who apply the creative design process to the development of 2-dimensional forms. The unit underpins many other specialised design units.

Details of Learning Activities

Learning activities will take place in a studio, workshop or classroom using industry standard tools and resources. You will complete exercises and industry style projects. You will also be required to undertake independent study.

Overview of Assessment

Evidence of the following is essential:
• production of a range of samples or concept realisations which show the creative application of processes to 2-dimensional forms
• knowledge of the design process as it applies to 2-dimensional work.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this course are graded.

Feedback throughout the course may be written, verbal or a combination of both.
To demonstrate competency in this course you need to complete each one of the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard.

TASK 1 - Formative assessment 
The elements & principles design statement using the city walk - due week 3
This assessment relates to learning the  language of the design industry. It will involve taking photographs on a ’City Walk’  and participating in class discussion about design elements and principals.  

TASK 2 - Formative assessment  
A2 Presentation Board - due week 5
It involves working on and visually presenting a materials board for the decoration industry.  The final submission is an A2 materials board related to an inspirational image of an interior.

TASK 3 - Summative assessment
Rug Design - due week 7
This project brings together all the elements of previous learning and applies them to an A3 board displaying an original rug design.  This project will be assessed with an industry partner.

An A3 visual diary will be a record of investigations undertaken, design concepts and development across all these projects.
