Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to select, use and maintain a range of business technology. This technology includes the effective use of computer software to organise information and data.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.

1.  Select and use technology

Performance Criteria:

1.1. Select appropriate technology and software applications to achieve the requirements of the task
1.2. Adjust workspace, furniture and equipment to suit user ergonomic requirements
1.3. Use technology according to organisational requirements and in a way which promotes a safe work environment


2.  Process and organise data

Performance Criteria:

2.1. Identify, open, generate or amend files and records according to task and organisational requirements
2.2. Operate input devices according to organisational requirements
2.3. Store data appropriately and exit applications without damage to or loss of, data
2.4. Use manuals, training booklets and/or online help or help-desks to overcome basic difficulties with applications


3.  Maintain technology

Performance Criteria:

3.1. Identify and replace used technology consumables in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and organisational requirements
3.2. Carry out and/or arrange routine maintenance to ensure equipment is maintained in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and organisational requirements
3.3. Identify equipment faults accurately and take action in accordance with manufacturer's instructions or report fault to designated person

Learning Outcomes

This unit applies to individuals who use business technology to perform a range of routine tasks. They use a limited range of practical skills and fundamental knowledge of equipment use and the organisation of data or files in a defined context, under direct supervision or with limited individual responsibility.

Home computer - It is advisable that you have a computer at home on which to do your
self directed work

Software - "Photoshop" is not supplied to students for home use. It is encouraged that
studets purchase a copy for home use for the duration of their course. Student versions
cost around $200.

Self paced online tutorial - If you find you are struggling with Photoshop, as an RMIT
student you will have access to the website tutorials. This can only be done for
free via the link below:

Building 8, level 7 - 24 hour, 7 day a week access is available to the "open labs" in building
8 if you require the use of a computer. Booking may be required (and will ensure you have
a PC for you)

Building 94, level 5, room 13 will be available most nights after 6pm till midnight (refer to to
timetable located on door of room). Note, an "access" form will need to be filled in and
approved prior to use of this room.

Evidence of the following is essential:
• selection and application of appropriate equipment and software applications in relation to assigned task/s
• access, retrieval and storage of required data
• performance of basic maintenance on a range of office equipment

Assessment Tasks

Task 1: Concept Mind Map
Project Outline
Create a mind map/ brainstorm of the concept or style of your interior perspective.

The following is required;

1. An A3 page in size, and is to include;
- images
- description of concept
- name and student number
- title

Submission (There are 2 parts to this submission) Session 4

1. Digital submission of  1 x A3 PDF file (the file must be named according to email etiquette)
T:\Secure\Submissions/2013-sem1/IDD/Photoshop_1st year_1(A,B,C,D)
Create a folder in your H drive called your student number ie. 1234567
In the folder put all the files for assessment and in the last class drop the whole folder into the T drive.
You cannot create or rename a folder in the T drive.

Assessment Matrix

You will receive feedback with verbal and/or written evaluation of your progress within
class time. The submitted projects will be assessed with written feedback as well as a
quality indicator that relates to separate components of the project and the overall
outcome. At the completion of the course, grading will be offered in addition to, and after,
competency based assessment.

Other Information

The major learning experience involves studio based exercises, demonstration and production. It
is strongly advised that students attend all sessions in order to engage in the required learning
activities, ensuring the maximum opportunity to gain the competency.

All assessment tasks are required to be completed to a satisfactory level. If you are unable to
complete any piece of assessment by the due date, you will need to apply for an extension.

If a student hands in any work that the teacher has never seen in class or discussed with the
