Course Description

The unit focuses on the application of project management skills and the requirement to meet time lines, quality standards, budgetary limits and other requirements set for the project.

The unit does not apply to specialist project managers. For specialist project managers, the units of competency in the Project Management competency field will be applicable.

3.4. Implement and monitor plans for managing project finances, resources (human, physical and technical) and quality

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage a straightforward project or a section of a larger project.


Details of Learning Activities

Course Description: This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage a straightforward project or a section of a larger project. It addresses the management of projects including the development of a project plan, administering and monitoring the project, finalising the project and reviewing the project to identify lessons learnt for application to future projects.

A range of teaching methods will be used to assess practical skills and knowledge which will include for this unit:
• writing a business report on the outcomes of the project which will review portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate
• observation of presentations
• oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of how the project relates to the organisation’s overall mission, goals, objectives and operations
• review of project risk management plan and project plan
• evaluation of project reports forwarded to stakeholders
• analysis of documentation reviewing project outcomes and processes against the project scope and plan
• evaluation of documentation outlining lessons learnt from the project

Overview of Assessment

Students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of a particular competency to be deemed competent. Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks.

Assessment will incorporate a variety of methods including assignments, journals, presentation and written or test. Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.
 


Assessment Tasks

Critical aspects of assessment:
Evidence of the following is essential:
• development of a project plan
• details of monitoring arrangement/s and evaluation of the project plan’s efficacy to address time lines and budgets of project
• knowledge of relevant legislation.

A range of assessment methods will be used to assess practical skills and knowledge which will include for this unit:

Major Assignment
This course’s assignment is to develop and implement either a project or an event that fits each participant’s needs according to the group’s and university requirement goals.
Project management is the planning and management of an event, project or activity. Therefore this event needs to:
• Inform and educate the community or publics about a cause;
• Obtain media coverage for an activity (if possible);
• Raise funds or provide strategic communication advice; and
• Celebrate a community’s strength and cohesiveness.

Assessment Matrix

ASSESSMENT TASK MARKS

Assessment 1:
Analysis of public relations campaigns supplied
Individual activities that looks at the function, form and strategy appeals of different forms of public relations

15% of total marks for course

Assessment 2:
Develop campaign recommendations for new pitch for a company

Group activity requiring development of strategies and creative recommendations.
Document to support the recommendations.
25% of total marks for course.

Assessment 3:
Presentation to client a full set of recommendations for the required project, event or campaign. This activity may take place outside RMIT facilities.
Group activity requiring presentation to clients requiring development of strategies, creative, media and budgetary recommendations. All team members to participate in the presentation.
Documentation to support the presentation and contact reports of student team meetings required.

50% of total marks for written proposal,
10% for oral presentation
