Overview of Assessment

Students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of competency to be deemed competent.

A range of assessment methods are used to assess practical skills and knowledge, for example:
• direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate
• review of authenticated documents from the workplace or training environment
• demonstration of techniques

Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Tasks OHTH 5592C

You are required to complete 3 tasks. You must successfully complete all 3 tasks to be deemed competent in this unit.

All files must be created individually and submitted or demonstrated to your teacher. Work should be demonstrated either on the day the exercise is completed, or at the beginning of the next class, as per the Teaching Schedule. You will be expected to retain soft copies of any documents submitted. In some cases printouts may be required.

You are required to complete 3 assessment tasks. You must successfully complete all 3 assessment tasks to be deemed competent in this unit.

ASSESSMENT TASK 1 – Conduct an OHS Audit and file a report with your finding

This assessment task consists of 2 parts:

Part 1.1 - Develop an auditor report template (Due Date: 25th Feb, 2013 - Week 3)

In this task you will develop the anatomical structure of a typical OHS report to function as a template for your OHS audit of the workplace. This template should include
• your group credentials, the name, group members, ...etc
• the date
• a sequence number
• a hazard name
• a hazard description
• a severity level
• who may potentially be affected by the hazard
• a possible resolution.
Draft your template and review it with your teacher prior to commencing to part 2.

Part 1.2 - Finalise the auditor report (Due Date: 11th March, 2013 - Week 5)

Using the report template developed in assessment task 1.1 you will conduct an OHS audit of our campus to ensure that RMIT is a safe workplace. You will need to identify hazards that RMIT has addressed and yet to address. In your audit report you will need to highlight these hazards and discuss their severity level and who may potentially be affected by them.
Requirements:
• Ensure that all fields in your template are addressed.
• Scale your photos accordingly to fit nicely in your document. If required reduce the size of your image using an image processing application, such as Adobe Photoshop. This will reduce the size of your document.
• Your report should feature 6 hazards as follows:
• 3 hazards that RMIT has not yet addressed
• 3 hazards that RMIT has addressed

All hazards should be documented using captured images that describe the hazard clearly. Your report should be in PDF format

Submission Requirements:
Please upload your report using the blackboard and clearly indicate it with your credentials. Please review your document before you submit and organize your file exchange archive accordingly. Keep all older versions in a separate folder and have only your completed assessment tasks in the file exchange directory.

You are required to present your report in front of class a week after submission. Details of presentation schedule will be discussed in class.

ASSESSMENT TASK 2 – Emergency Procedure (Due Date: 8th April, 2013 - Week 8)

You are required to research and present an emergency and evacuation procedure for a given security scenario. As a basis, please consider the RMIT emergency procedures manual. You are required to analyse the emergency procedure manual and study the different aspects of its content. Your task is to pick one topic of the following and present it as an OHS advisory group.

The topics are:
• Evacuation drills, general safety requirements and general building information, fire
• Bomb Threats
• Armed Intruders
• Earth quakes, civil disorder, airborne contaminants
• Medical emergency, gas leak and chemical spills

For your presentation, please consider a presentation format, e.g. MS PowerPoint, Keynote or others. Please allow 10 minutes for a Q&A session after the presentation. Kindly consider the following
• Plan the structure and flow of your presentation (your presentation is a story!) Link ideas together to ensure the content flow
• Engage your audience,
• Use dot points to highlight your content; use visuals to complement it, use animation, if it complements your presentation
• Summarise your presentation at the end to remind your audience of the journey

Submission Requirements:
Please upload your presentation document to the file exchange and include your credentials.

TASK 3 – OHS System as a website (Due Date: 20th May & 27th May, 2013 - Week 14 & 15 for Presentations)

Based on the data you already acquired in your previous audit (Assessment Task 1), as well as the information you learned in your emergency procedure presentation (Assessment Task 2), you are required to develop a website that should work as a system, in which you make recommendation for a safe work place.

The website should also function as a repository to register and document hazards and respective recommendations. The progress on your website will be reviewed by your teacher before submitting it. Please ensure that all links and styling is accurate, and that your website looks professional when you are presenting it.

Submission Requirements:
Please zip your website into an archive and name it using your credentials. Please ensure that all links are working and that you have included all you images and assets.

Resubmission Guide:
Once a student has submitted an assessment task, a resubmission maybe granted if deemed NYC. On resubmission, student will not receive a grade higher than CAG (Competency achieved)

Marking Guide (competency):

Vocational Education and Training (VET) is based on current industry needs and the focus on preparing you for the workplace. Because VET courses are informed by practical application of knowledge and skills, they are based on a system known as ‘competency based training’ (CBT).

So when you are assessed in VET it is about whether you are competent to do the job, as well as having a firm grasp on the knowledge and skills required to do that job, as opposed to traditional curriculum based education settings that are often based on knowledge retention.

You need to demonstrate you are competent in each element of the unit of competency you are studying.

You will receive feedback on each assessment task that will inform you whether you are competent or not and how well you are performing. Once competent in all elements of the unit you receive a competency grading.

Please refer to the Final Grades table below.

Marking Guide (Grading)

After achieving competency we then grade your performance in the unit; this gives you the opportunity to have the level of your performance formally recognized against industry standards and employability skills.

The grading is according to the following criteria:

1. LEVEL OF INDEPENDENCE, INITIATIVE, ENTERPRISE AND PERFORMANCE OF WORK TASK

We are looking for a high level of ability to complete all tasks as per the specifications required as well as demonstrating a high level of initiative and independent thought in your approaches to developing and implementing a sustainability policy.

2. DEMONSTRATED BREADTH OF UNDERPINNING KNOWLEDGE AND A WILLINGNESS TO CONTINUE LEARNING

We are looking for depth of understanding of the OHS issues & Policies in the IT industry as well as a comprehensive knowledge of best practice for implementing and continuously improving safety in the workplace.

3. TECHNIQUES & PROCESSES, TECHNOLOGY SKILLS AND PROBLEM SOLVING

We are looking for appropriate use of technology to assist in preparing a clear and accurate policy suitable for implementation in the workplace. You also need to show an understanding of the kinds of problems that can arise in promoting sustainable work practices and how these might be addressed.

4. WORK ORGANISATION, PLANNING AND SELF MANAGEMENT

We expect to see ongoing progress on class discussions and exercises and full utilisation of Blackboard as per course requirements and timely submission of all required assessment tasks.

5. COMMUNICATION, PEOPLE NETWORKING, LANGUAGE AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS AND TEAMWORK

We expect to see contributions to relevant discussions and scheduled team sessions. In addition your tasks should demonstrate a very good understanding of strategies for a collaborative approach towards teamwork and interpersonal skills.

Final Grades Table:

CHD Competent with High Distinction
CDI Competent with Distinction
CC Competent with Credit
CAG Competency Achieved – Graded
NYC Not Yet Competent
DNS Did Not Submit for assessment

Further information regarding the application of the grading criteria will be provided by your teacher.
