Course Description

This unit specifies the outcomes required to research and recommend soft furnishings for various decoration and design solutions to meet client and project brief requirements.

Research and recommend soft floor coverings

Performance Criteria:

Range of floor coverings, their application and installation requirements are researched
The features, limitations and environmental impact of floor coverings are identified
Floor area is measured and details recorded accurately for flooring solution
Flooring solution is selected and details specified to meet client requirements
Cost estimates are calculated and assessed against project budget


Assess soft furnishing requirements for the project

Performance Criteria:

Applicable work health and safety (WHS), legislative and organisational requirements relevant to researching and recommending soft furnishings are verified and complied with
Project brief is reviewed to determine desired effects for interior space
Parameters for the project are assessed and confirmed
Resources are selected appropriate to work requirements and checked for operational effectiveness
Communication with others is established and maintained


Research materials for soft furnishings

Performance Criteria:

Aesthetic, visual characteristics and colour requirements of the soft furnishings are assessed
Intended applications for the soft furnishings are analysed and reviewed
New soft furnishing and material technologies are researched and assessed against the project brief
Tactile requirements of the soft furnishings in relation to the design are researched
Properties of the materials used in the production of soft furnishings are analysed and evaluated
Manufacturing processes and available expertise for the materials are assessed
Costs and availability of materials are assessed and compared
Environmental impact and benefits of materials are assessed
Durability, restorability and maintenance care quality of materials are researched and requirements for residential and industrial applications examined


Research and recommend decorative treatments for windows and openings

Performance Criteria:

Range of window treatments, their application and fixing technologies are researched
New technologies in window treatments are researched and relevance for decorative project identified
The features, limitations and environmental impact of window treatments are identified
The types of openings and their requirements are identified and a range of possible creative solutions determined
Window or opening is measured and details recorded accurately for a range of window treatments
Fabric requirements are calculated and manufacturing requirements determined for a range of window treatments taking into consideration pattern repeats
Window treatment is selected and specified to meet client requirements and minimise environmental impact

Fixing technology is specified appropriate to selected window treatment
Cost estimates are calculated and assessed against project budget


Document and present decorative recommendations

Performance Criteria:

Soft furnishings are selected to achieve parameters of design brief
Specifications are documented for all soft furnishing recommendations
Schedule is presented to support decorative solution
Sample board is created to enhance and support the decorative intention
Feedback and follow up is instigated and maintained with the client

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course is project based.

Assessment Tasks

 Feedback & assessment is on-going throughout the course. Assessment will incorporate a range of methods to assess performance and the application of knowledge and skills

Feedback throughout the course may be written, verbal or a combination of both - feedback needs to be recorded & acted upon

To demonstrate competency in this course you need to complete each one of the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard.

Task 1A: Fabric File
(Full time program - We will continue to build on the investigative work you have
commenced in semester 1 in Decorate Residential Interiors)
To explore fibres & weaves in depth and to assist your understanding of fabrics for suitable
application in the Interiors Industry.

Task 2: Calculations for Window treatments Assessment
A test covering fabric calculations and fabric and window treatment questions

Task 3: Warehouse bedroom fit out
You will be required to link this project to the investigative work you commenced in Decorate
Residential Interiors under different decorating styles.
Further to this you will be required to design, source and document all aspects of this project to
allow you to make a proposal to a client.

All tasks must be completed to gain a pass in this course and be deemed competent overall.
Soft Furnishings for Interiors is a prerquisite for Specify Furnishing Solutions or Industry experience.
You will receive feedback with verbal and/or written evaluation of your progress within class time. The submitted projects will be assessed with written feedback as well as a quality indicator that relates to separate components of the project and the overall outcome (rubric).
At the completion of the course, grading will be offered in addition to, and after, competency based assessment.
