Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide competency based training to provide the student with fundamental knowledge and practical skills in the use of aircraft tooling and fastening systems. As well as installation and removal of aircraft rivets and close tolerance fasteners.

Learning Outcomes


1. Describe and use drills and associated tools used to cut holes in aircraft materials.
2. Select the correct type, length and diameter of rivet for installation.
3. Install and remove aircraft rivets.
4. Demonstrate use and care of reamers.
5. Cold work holes in aircraft structures.
6. Install and remove aircraft close tolerance fasteners.
7. Identify and operate power/machine tools.
8. Remove and install hardware covering a range of fits.
9. Form an internal and external thread by hand cutting.
10. Maintain threaded components.


Details of Learning Activities

The purpose of this module is to provide competency based training to develop knowledge and skills in the selection and use of tools, tooling, hardware and manufacture of components for the aircraft industry.

Assessment of this course consists of a closed book examination worth 70% and practical activities worth 30%.


Assessment Tasks

To satisfactory complete this course:
A pass in both practical and theory must be achieved.
Participants are required to complete all assessments
