Course Description
The purpose of this course is to provide training to develop the skills and attributes needed to work effectively with subordinates, peers, colleagues and managers, with emphasis on work teams.
It is suitable for participants who have an established work orientation, can perform tasks under nominal supervision, and more complex tasks with direction. It is also suitable for participants who have responsibility for others in a work team situation, graduates or professional staff who desire or need, but have not had management training.

Learning Outcomes
1. Plan and present strategies and engage in activities to improve teams and their performance.
2. Analyse needs and plan for self and individual development related to the job role within a work team.
Details of Learning Activities
Participants will engage in a number of activities to achieve the desired learning outcomes this includes:
- Discussing case studies in class.
- Engaging in a group assignment.
- Watching and analysing videos.
- Participating in reflective reading activities.

Week one
Introduction. Groups and team differences, characterestics of effective teams.
Week two
Conflict management and time management within teams. Team meetings
Week three
Leadership and hierarchy structures. Leaderless teams. Separation of responsibilities. Delegation of responsibilities. Team meetings.
Week four
Documentation of activities, and stages of task completion. Diaries, file notes and incident reports. Team meetings.
Week five
Milestone meeting – documentation by all teams, and team members, of task progress.
Week six
Case studies in aviation/aerospace of effective – and ineffective – team management. See notes for details of case studies.
Week seven
Specialised work teams. Committees and sub-committees. Job roles and personal performance.
Week eight
Culture and its influence on team work.
Week nine
Risk management aspects: hazards and risk identification.

Overview of Assessment
To successfully to complete this course the student is required to pass written assessment tasks and demonstrate skills and ability by completing practical tasks.
Assessment Tasks
In semester one/2009, participants are required to complete two assessment tasks. The first assessment task is a group assignment worth 50% and accompanied presentation (10%). The second is an Individual Journal about different topics covered in the learning activities in class(40%).
