Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide training to enable participants to create, promote and maintain environments where quality, productivity enhancement and continuous improvement are integral to the culture, systems and processes of the organisation.
The course focuses on the implementations, statistical concepts, team management and interpretation of data through quality management and continuous improvement concepts and applications.

1. Explain the key concepts and practices of quality management and continuous improvement and the advantages for organisations and individuals.

Details of Learning Activities


The purpose of this course is to provide training to enable participants to understand the concept of maintaining environments where quality, productivity enhancement and continuous improvement are integral to the culture, systems and processes of the organisation. On-line materials and learning recourcesd  with the use of WIKI will be used.

Lesson 2: Core Concepts and Principles of Quality Management

Lesson 3: Quality Gurus, PDCA Cycle, Quality Costs, Training and Teams

Lesson 4: Tools and Techniques, Data Collection and Problem solving

Lesson 5: Quality Assurance

Lesson 6: Concepts of TQM, Analyse the organisational elements that support TQM, Use statistical tools for quality measurement

Lesson 7: Implementation Strategies –Strategic, Implementation Strategies -Operational

Lesson 8: Managing change, Effective communication

Lesson 9: Continuous improvement, Benchmarking, Australian Quality Awards criteria

Overview of Assessment

To successfully to complete this course the student is required to pass written assessment tasks and demonstrate skills and ability by completing practical tasks.


Assessment Tasks

The first assessment task (60%) addresses Learning Outcome 1 & 2. 


The second assessment task (40%) is an open book final examination at the end of the subject.

The learning outcomes 1 and 2 will be addressed in the first assessment. They are:

1. Explain the key concepts and practices of quality management and continuous improvement and the advantages for organisations and individuals

2. Develop plans for implementing and maintaining quality management and continuous improvement programs

Assignment 1 - (20%) -   To be Submitted in Session 4 

Assignment  2 - (40%)  - To be Submitted in Session 8

Examination (Open Book) - (40%) - To  be conducted at the end of the unit.
