Course Description

This unit covers the competency to use the Australian Standard AS 1170 to determine and to calculate different kinds of loadings on structural elements and to perform analysis of beam and column structures involving calculation of such features as support reactions, shear and bending moments.

Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

EDX130 – Use mathematics at technician level
EDX140 – Use quadratic, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions and matrices
EDX100 – Solve simple problems in Statics and Strength of Materials

National Competency Codes and Titles

National Element Code & Title: EDC030 Determine design loads on beams and columns Elements: Calculate loading on structural elements due to liquid pressure Calculate the distribution of forces at joints in accordance with the elements’ stiffness Carry out a detailed analysis of a simply supported beam including calculations for simple bending, shear, deflection, local buckling and lateral buckling Carry out a detailed analysis of a structural member subject to compression loads Carry out analysis of continuous beams Carry out analysis of simple rectangular frames Use AS1170 Parts 0 & 1 to calculate dead load and live load on simple structural elements Use the simplified procedure from AS1170 Part 2 to calculate wind load on simple structural elements

Learning Outcomes

• Use AS1170 Parts 0 & 1 to calculate dead load and live load on simple structural elements
• Use the simplified procedure from AS1170 Part 2 to calculate wind load on simple structural elements
• Carry out a detailed analysis of a simply supported beam including calculations for simple bending, shear, deflection, local buckling and lateral buckling
• Carry out a detailed analysis of a structural member subject to compression loads
• Carry out analysis of continuous beams
• Carry out analysis of simple rectangular frames
• Calculate the distribution of forces at joints in accordance with the elements’ stiffness

Overview of Assessment

This unit will be assessed in the classroom environment using holistic assessment, based on typical workplace activities.
Assessment will comprise the following :

• A project based upon the analysis of a 3 dimensional building frame using industry drawings.
• Two 2-hour examinations (mid-semester and end-of-semester)
• An assignment covering element 3 - A retaining wall subjected to liquid pressure
